Hello!

I wanted to ask how you do to make your parrot play when heā€™s in the cage. When Iā€™m gone to work or something I look at Mambo by the camera and he doesnā€™t play... his cage is full of toys so I donā€™t get it.. I donā€™t really want him to stay on a branch -.-

Jose :)

The secret is to find a toy of interest. Most of my birds in cages love wooden chew toys and strands of plastic chain. They prefer brightly colored blocks of wood, though one pair enjoys 2 x 4 inches of lumber cut into foot long sections.

As far as chain is concerned, you'll want to consider BPA-free chain that is free of heavy metals.

Jousze, I believe Scott is exactly correct in saying find a toy of interest. When Mambo is out of the cage roaming, does he show any interest in playing with specific things, paper? boxes? wood chewing possibly? find his interest, replicate it and install it in Mambo's cage to peak his curiosity, and watch him go to work. Many times were so busy with other things, we fail to identify specific behavior when they give us opportunities to observe. It's all part of the investigation process of discovering his interests and he will be much happier because of it.

I noticed that my DYH loved pencils too, so I went to Walmart and found I could get little "craft sticks" that were basically a pack of little dowel rods cut about the length and diameter of pencil. I throw a couple in his toy box in his cage a couple days a week and he loves them.

jousze, here's an idea for you. Go to your local hardware store, they sell lumber. In the lumber section you will find wood dowels, You DO NOT want to use a real pencil, because it had Led on the inside which will be toxic to your bird Cut the dowels to size to replicate the pencil, Then use child safe food coloring, as you would use on Easter eggs, and color the pencil as decoratively as you have time for, even replicating an eraser on one end, use hemp rope, or a bird safe rope to attach it to the inside of the cage. Handle the make believe dowel so that your baby can see it, then attach it to the inside of the cage to allow him to play with it, You can do this as a pen, pencil, and just be creative with anything else you handle that he's attracted too. Hope this helps and gives you some ideas.
