i have been playing with the idea of growing plants in nuts cage, the space between the grate and tray, is deep enough for a plant pot, an a bit more so nut cannot get at the dirt, and the plant should grow between grate

what plants would be suitable?

i am thinking a tall plant/flower?, that she could eat/chew, fast growing as these would probably be thrown during the major cage clean

also could i keeps plants alive suspended in water similar to hydrowhatsit called? as that would be a cleaner option

Maybe herbs? Organeo, basil, lots of mint varieties. The seed is cheap, you could grow several & switch them out when they get too torn up. I dont know about hydrowhatsit? I've heard of tomatoes grown that way, but the leaves & stalk are poison. Maybe find something on the net. Wish you were closer, I have 100's of pots that would be perfect for this. I would try it for Merlin, but he's so rarely in his cage, it wouldnt be worth the effort. He doesnt pay attention to my plants, I cant even get him to chew a little lemon leaves.

Im thinking of trying sprouting, his diet is better, but still have a long ways to go before its ideal.

nut wont touch the spouting beans etc i offer, but u was thinking plants mainly as she is in her cage as part of her routine,

over christmas i put brussle sprout stalks in her cage like an extra perch an she loved chewing out the middle, but she doesn't seem to be bothered with her toys etc

That's a good idea! I've been thinking of putting plants in Puck's cage, but I haven't figured it out yet. That, and I can't keep a potted plant alive to save my life.

Hydroponics? I don't know much about it, but there's lots of info online about it. It sounds like a good idea.

Are been plants good for birds? Some beans are fast growing, and it might be neat if they could grow around the bars a bit. :)

I am also planning to plant a certain plant at home, but i don't know what plant is suitable for indoor gardening.

Hoping you can provide me advice guys.

Thanks! :blue1:

Wifey uses my bathroom sink when cleaning the bird dishes. One morning last week I found a bean caught in the drain closure, and it had sprouted roots and a top. She has it growing outside now. :)

Hydroponics takes a lot of light. The alternate question is whether a parrot would be happy in a green house.

That is a great idea, I would go with herbs which would really be good for them. My only concern would be moisture in the cage it might cause the cage to rust.

I 've planted Rye Grass in small containers to put under the grate in the cockatiel flight. They love it and it's very easy to grow. You can plant it in something as shallow as a jar lid or shallow dish.
