Not sure if anyone has any experience with Pigeons, but I am the temporary guardian of a gorgeous pigeon that flew into a second story window as I was entering the Mall on Friday. He then hit the cement structures around the entrance and then spiraled down to the pavement below. We picked him up immediately and held him still for a while, but when it became apparent that he was not going to fly away we took him home and called my vet. There was nothing visually wrong with him. He went through phases including one where he fell over and had no response. I assumed he was leaving this world, but he was soon up and walking around. Long story short, my vet (works with wildlife, Audubon and zoo birds) examined him and said to give him time. He still is loopy from his accident. Keep him quiet, safe and with plenty of food and water and just give him time. He has been pooping a lot and vet felt he had a full crop yesterday. So I was happy with our progress.
Today he is much more wild bird like :) Cranky with me, finally making pigeon noise and a little cranky growl when I picked him up today. His head is more straight, both eyes open today and he is walking straighter. I am offering seed, pellets, bread, fruit, greens, and a warm mash this AM. I did not see new poops this AM and his crop does not feel very full. I am concerned that he may not be able to lean over to eat. I refilled the water bowl and positioned it higher also scattered food on his floor, in a bowl hung on the crate, as well as now more head level in a raised shallow dish. Also tilted a piece of bread up against the wall so maybe he can nibble at it if he can't lean over.
He is in the garage, so no shared air with my birds and I have separate shoes, smock when I go out there and then I scrub when I come back in (to protect my birds).

Sorry to go on so long. Just curious if anyone can think of anything else to offer Mr Evel Knievel, He is progressing well, but I am concerned about his food intake. I changed his papers, so will check later to see if he is pooping today. He was as of last night.

Thanks,
laura

Just checked on him and when I opened the garage door, I heard him scurry back to the far corner of his crate. So he was wandering around. He also has done a nice big normal looking poop. So if after 48hrs plus since his accident, if he was not eating anything or drinking, would he have big normal poops? Sorry to be so neurotic, but he is such a good little guy, I really am hoping he makes it.

I love on how you take precautions, you always have to be careful with outside birds. I think your doing everything good so there is nothing I could tell you except just try to keep him warm . Wher do you plan releasing him? He probely not eating because he's so scared , put him in a room that nobody really visits than what I do is that I play bird songs on my computer which helps them relax and eat a little. This poop you where talking about was probely from somthing he ate yesterday.

Hi, not sure how old. I have had him since Fri noon when he crash landed . He saw my vet sat morning. This morning I brought my vet his night papers so he could see the poops. He thought all was fine. I am not convinced he is eating, but i guess if he has been with me over 3 1/2 days and still having normal poops, he is taking in something. I also have started soaking some small pellets in warm water and have been popping them in his beak and he swallows them fine. He also dipped his beak into the warm pellet water and drank a little tonight.

Time will tell. His wings are much stronger, but still walks a bit off balance. And is definitely still a little loopy. I hope he is able to regain his balance and shows me he can put his neck down to eat on his own.
