Petsmart's New Bird Habitats - Terrible

I stopped in today specifically to see what birds they had there. The new cage display is like a big glas box. The older ones were a little higher so the birds were at a better height for THEM, and there wasn't a solid glass barrier that seems practically sound proof. When staff wants to take the out to interact or to had to customer, they have to go inside this VERY small (like smaller than an airplane bathroom) room that is tucked away inside the center of this grouping of cages. It's very small and uncomfortable for two normal sized people.

The associate there (she really loves her birdies) said that they are selling far fewer birds now becuase of this new set up. The sun conures and gcc's used to come down to the front of the cage where the visitors were and all could interact.

It looks like a fishtank without the top open. Grrrrrrrrr.

That setup isn't necessarily new in my area... don't really like it either... but eh, the smaller it is, the more floor space they have for items that will make a profit!

They even streamlined the bird accessories into one aisle now, whereas it used to be two.

well, i may not fully agree with it, but a good part of it is some protection to the birds. i mean, glass walls keeps fingers from poking and prodding, some birds may get hurt from kids, and also might prevent some disease transfer. say a bird owner comes in, one not aware of how disease is spread, pokes hands in cage and voila, illness possibly spread from their bird at home. it'll at least offer some protection against that... but they should definitely make them bigger.

thats how the cages have been for years here, going as far back as maybe 5-10 years.

yup, the Pet Smarts up here are doing the same thing. new set up with the birds, now our store only carries various finches, budgies, and green cheek conures.

The bird toys and cages are now on one side of one isle.

Personally I hate the way they are doing things.
I use to somewhat enjoy going in there, now I rarely go in at all.

Sorry to hear that about your store. Ours only sells finches, budgies and some occasional conures, but the finches and budgies were in glass tanks that are very close to the ground so passing dogs can stick their faces right up next to them. The conures though, when they are available, are in a very large (3 by 4 feet) plastic case with bars up higher for fresh air.
