DH and the kids and I were so excited to get a bird yesterday. We drove a long way to pick up a cage and then went to the bird store. The guy I had talked to had been so helpful and the store apparently had been in business for over 20 years.
However, upon entering the store, we were shocked at how crowded it was. Bird cages crammed the place up in two rooms (one room was more open).
We still wanted to get a caique we saw there because the guy on the phone had said the breeder had dropped them off yesterday. They were so friendly and one cuddled me so much. There was a big cockatoo on a hanging toy near the caiques and whenever he flapped around or called out they would shiver and cower. Many birds I saw just sitting still even when I talked to them. It was very disturbing.
Long story short,, they said the 1 inch spacing on the cage meant we had to get another cage. When we went to get another car seat for a kiddo so we could move stuff around and called them, telling them we'd be back to get the cage and bird. Well, when we got back the store had closed, (it was 7 on the nose and they close at 7) and they didn't respond to the knock on the door.
It really left all of us with a frustrated feeling. But in the end with the way things had worked out we were glad we hadn't given them money. I felt bad for the little birds who had been there for months. The cages were clean, the place wasn't stinky, but it sure made me want to buy from a breeder directly rather than a very crowded shop. I don't see how one employee working at a time could give that many birds individual attention as needed and help customers.
Birds have been so hard to find around here. We'd really like to meet birds in person but in the breeds we're interested in are all very far away.
It was heartbreaking to cuddle a bird and know he'd be a fabulous bird but then not to go home with him even though we had tried to be so cooperative with the shop lady.
