Hi everyone

Need some help with changing to pellet feed

So I sat and done alot of research about pellet before buy some.
I bought the zupreem natrual as it have no artificial colouring and was raing very highly in all the reviews. So I starting off mixing I read up while changing the first week so be 75% seed to pellet then gradually reduce the seed content and increase the pellets.

But I haven't been able to completely remove the seed as bash is just throught the pellets away.

I have tryd using the pellet as rewards during training to help him get a taste for it. I have tryd crushing them as seen sometimes crushing them and putting it over other food can help . But when it come in to food in the cage he will through them out but will take them from me

Any advice would be greatly appreciated .

He also still get his greens and veg daily.

Thanks elaine and bash x :green:

I have always just changed the pellets completely and McCoy has started eating them. I just take away all the old food and only offer the new pellets and it's done by the end of the day. If you leave the preferred food they just eat that and not the new one. I've done it 3 times now because it seems that a pellet that is considered a "good" one soon becomes not so good! However, I'm really stumped at the moment! McCoy will NOT eat TOPs!! I'll let you know what I've tried, it might work for you! I've sweetened them by using a tiny bit of honey in water and soaked them. I've blended them to powder in a blender and mixed with chop and gradually increased the amount of pellet. I've blended the pellets to powder and added pureed apple. He won't touch them! I've decided to go back to Harrisons. Good luck!

Hi jottlebot

Thank for the reply I will try that just remove the seed. Was worried incase he just didnt eat.

I will always try blending them and eating something else to see if that helps :d thank you

At first I'd soak the Zupreem natural-colored pellets in warm water for a minute before serving.
Pico dove into them when they were warm and wet.

I gradually eliminated the water and he still loves them.

Also, cut way back on the seed that day so your bird is a bit hungry when the pellets are served.

You could try mixing the seed and pellets together, and each day out less and less seed 8n the mixture until it is 100% pellet. Then you can offer seeds only as treats.

You're getting some great ideas.

I'll add my two cents, as usual.

I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables! My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products.
Another couple of ideas...
My ol' man is an athlete and health nut. He actually EATS all the good stuff, so it's always around. I find that tossing various stuff into the food bowls at random is good... the variations and differences seem to stimulate curiosity and attention.
The other idea... if you can stand it (lol) EAT the stuff in front of the birds, yes. That encourages them. I have also found that if my ol' man eats stuff in front of the bird, the bird WANTS it for himself. Kinda a rivalry thing!
