Pellet Question

Hi Everyone,

Levi is on a healthy diet, pellets, fresh organic veggies, fruits (sparingly as per vet) grains etc. We do have a ritual of a few nuts in the evening when cuddling and watching TV. Vet suggests Almonds as the best choice.

When I bought him he was on Zupreem natural. My Vet at 1st check up recommended Harrison’s. He is very good about eating his pellets. (Thank goodness) :smile049:

However, he goes through phases where all of a sudden he stops eating the pellets. Therefore, I switch back to Zupreem and he eats them enthusiastically. (He prefers the large ones w/ the Cockatoo on the bag.) Than he stops eating the Zupreem and I switch him back to Harrison’s. I also, date the bag when I open it and don’t use it beyond the 6 week recommendation.
I always buy him the course pellets. I just picked up the fine to see if he’ll eat them? I Haven’t offered them to him yet as he eating the Zupreem nicely at the moment.

Do any of your birds do this? Just curious.

Well, for once, the Rb does something reasonable and good. I shall mark the day!! He eats his Harrison's like clockwork!

I might be doing it totally wrong here... but I feed a mix of pellets. Zupreme, Tops, and Harrisons along with daily varied chop mix. Cookie my 31 yo BFA is probably healthier now than he has been in a while.

I also give a mix of 4 different pellets. Not in the same bowl though. I store everything in the freezer.

Tops, I’ll have to look into that one.

I like to keep it separate for a couple of reasons, the main one so I can see if he’s eating them. B/c he goes through these phases.

Oliver is on roudybush per vet recomandation, he was on the colored stuff when I get him.
Of course fresh veggies and like you less fruits.

Okay, I found Tops & Roudybush on Amazon.
I’m going to get them & mix it up. Maybe he just gets bored w/ the same brand day in and day out?

Hi Tami and Levi, I use TOPs for Plum in small quantities and he seems to like them, no need to swap and change and they can be kept in the freezer which helps.

Go through the choices you like and take a close look at the first six ingredients listed and then see if you are still as keen to feed to Levi after that.

I mix harrisons and zupreem together. Sometimes I add a little bit of regular bird seed (very little) and my birds seem to like it. Perry digs for something he likes I don't know what but he sure makes a mess scooping it out of the bowl and onto the floor. Little stinker. I worry they don't get enough nuts (I am allergic to tree nuts so I try and not touch any) but they get sunflower treats from time to time. They really like those little dried orange things and white things from the conure treat bag must be like dried mangos or something. Anyways I think mixing the pellets gives them enough variety (I use two different types of the zupreem and then the fine harrisons pellets since my flock is mainly small to mid size). they get clean bills of health and their weight doesn't fluctuate much so I think it's a good mix. I imagine like most people they just have their preferences and somedays they want the harrisons and somedays its the zupreem. Somedays it's none of it and they wait for their daily veggies of kale, spinach, peppers, broccoli, apples, oranges and whatnot. They love kale. perry goes for the oranges right away I try and only put a small amount of the fruit and more veggies. I don't cook much so they get a lot of raw veggies. their beaks get all green its cute.

I have actually heard better things about zupreem and roudybush. Some recommend against harrisons due to the corn filler. I have never used it personally, so I can't confirm that. I know all three are high up on the list.

Another item I give as a "goodie" is Harrisons Power Treats. Its a different texture with a slightly sweet taste. (yes I taste what I feed em) I don't put it in the bowls, just offer by hand a few times a day. Anything to add to variety for the critters.

I feed four also to my RB2’s. Harrison’s fine, Tops, Zupreem natural and Higgins Intune. (Layla loves to dunk zupreem and higgins) They also go through phases of liking one one day and not the next. I’ve also tried roudybush and goldenorbles with no luck. Tops is the one they tend to eat the most of and my favorite ingredient wise.

I have been using zumpreem for my macaw, Kalani. I use roudybush for the cockatoos. I have read that the higher calcium in roudybush may benefit the "dusty" birds. There is a ton of anecdotal evidence for benefits of all brands, but in reality there hasn't been research done. I would say of those listed, you probably aren't going wrong with any of them.

Thank you! I’m psyched about the new pellets. I’m always very aware of giving Levi calcium rich foods. That’s great info on the Roudybush! :smile049:
