Peanuts (in shells)

Hi,

The breeder of our African Grey parrot advised us not to give the parrot Peanuts because it causes "fungal diseases", is that true...? If yes, how come Peanuts are part of a parrot diet like this one:

Peanuts and peanuts in a shell are connected to 'fungal diseases' in Parrots.

With 'some' prepacked Parrot foods, the peanuts are deshelled, washed and lightly cooked and most importantly, packed a Human Grade processing facility. That all being true, even dry roasted peanuts you buy in glass jars can have fungal disease.

Why are they included in premixes, cause Parrots love them! Plus, most owners are unaware of the likelihood of peanut based fungal disease.

I agree with Sailboat. I don't feed peanuts, knowingly. I read all ingredient labels on pellets and other foods before purchasing them for Tsali and don't steer clear of all those that claim to have peanut products. I just hope that there is "truth in labeling". Poor little red tail,Tsali, has never even had a taste of peanut butter.

Amazingly mine never developed a taste for them or sunflower seeds, I probably would have fed them to him a lot before I joined here and learned better.

but is it one of those things like don't go outside cause you could be hit by a car? all foods can present a danger whether they get moldy or water gets dirty. do you stop giving them water cause who knows whats in it?!

I do steer clear of peanuts in shells though but a lot of owners don't have issues with them.

Oh its fine as a treat, especially for training.... some people are very overprotective....I just meant my bird would have been a fatty if he had taken to them.

bahahaha yea mine love sunflower seeds but I take them out of their food and give them as treats so they don't get fat. my black capped is much fatter than my GCC currently. :rainbow1:

back to the topic at hand, peanuts are fatty. and pose a threat but probably no more than the risk of moldy food. I think it gets a bad rap because that particular type of fungus is deadly but like I said, if you go outside you risk getting run over.

In my opinion, peanuts are too risky to deal with! Even shelled are a threat. All it takes is one bad nut in a batch and that mold will be spread throughout all of it! I eat nuts every day(heart health #1), and have many a times, crossed funky peanuts in what supposed to be a high-end mix! Remember, cooking does NOT lessen the danger!

I am going to rethink my stance on them. Salty gets one every day, human grade and funky or broken open ones are discarded. 'Boats, you and Mark say they are N/G, that carries a lot of weight with me.
I'm not a peanut fan ( except Padang sauce - yummy ) but my wife and boys are.

So -question - are shelled walnuts any better?
