Peanut Butter..

...every morning before brekky Amy gets his heart med. Usually I just squirt it onto a small piece of bread. I've been mixing it up lately I make myself a toasted English muffin with peanut butter for myself so lately I've been toasting it,then squirt the med into a "nook and cranny" and add a dab of peanut butter. Amy is always eagerly awaiting at his nummy bowl for his little piece. Its the very first thing he eats. I go back about ten minutes later and there isn't a crumb left I see him on his perch licking his toes to get any stuck on pb off of them. The things we do for our fids!

My Sam will kill for peanut butter. Make sure you get an organic one. The others have too many pesticides and fake fats. It will be better for him.

Peanut butter is available in simple form, just peanuts ground to either crunchy or creamy consistency. No need to buy brands with added fats, sugar, and salt!

All my birds love peanut butter and nothing gives me greater pleasure than having them lick their yummy treat from my finger. They're always so gentle: never a hint of biting or grabbing. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! Even Rosetta has learned to lick nicely rather than chomp her treat out of my skin.

When I got my first batch of fancy mice, I used peanut butter to tame them. I just put the tiniest smear on the tip of each finger and then held my hand in their tank. Within minutes, the greedy little things were licking away. Before long, I could put a dab of peanut butter in the middle of my palm and just wait. Again, it took just minutes for greedy mice to sit in my hand in order to get the treat.

I reckon peanut butter is an invaluable training aid for both mice and birds. They love it so much, they'll do a lot to get it. As other posters have said, you must only use the tiniest amount and be sure to get a good quality salt-free low-fat variety. I'll never forget the day my beautiful fawn mouse, Ruaridh, walked a tightrope for me. Yes, there was peanut butter at the other end.

Peanut butter has been a Godsend while medicating my birds. Peanut butter and toast! Those two items have saved me from having to force feed medication over the years... a prospect that falls far short of pleasant.

I'm glad to hear that Amy still accepts the PB flavored meds without complaint, Jim. How has he been doing? Have his labs looked any better?

At the health food store here there’s a section where you can grind your own peanut butter. Just a big giant bin of peanuts waiting to be ground up. Timneh also loves peanut Butter and was jealous of my dog cause she was getting her meds with peanut butter.

I truly wishes that I could honestly soapbox the dangers of peanut butter and Amazons. But, over the years, all of our Amazons have beat feet to get a taste of Amazon Gold. Whether the worst overly chemical /fat loaded stuff or the most natural versions available, it is just plain dangerous for Amazons. Yes, all that stuff added to the worst variation is just plain bad. But the single worst problem for Amazons: It's rich in protein. And high protein diets for Amazon can be down right deadly.

What it comes down to is playing limited access to Amazon Gold! Whether faced with providing medication or just trying to maintain some level of peace in one's home, near every Amazon staff person has to continually remind ourselves that we are playing a dangerous game with their Health!

I'm working at just twice per week and not very much. Yes, it is Breakfast time and he knows, which day is 'PB' day! Even before I get things ready, he has already landed and taken up his position. He has no problem what-so-ever in letting me know if I'm taking to long! Our only small success is that he has come to understand when the amount is complete, it's over with until that next special day. At that point, there is no thank-you, it just off to his food bowl for the other lowly offerings.
