Valentino - Red Fronted Macaw - Hatched August 12, 2012
Sunday will be two weeks Valentino my Red Fronted Macaw has been with us. He turned 4 months old on the 12 of December so at this time he requires a lot of care and attention. He is settling in real nice and is maintaining weight to slowly gaining weight.

However he is the only parrot. In the future I would like to add ONE more parrot to our family. I have done some research with what kind of parrots could live in the same home so I am going to keep the second parrot in the new world area for choice of birds.

I have a second stainless steel cage for the second parrot. It is smaller than Valentino's and would be large enough for a medium sized parrot. My plan is to acquire a second bird that can be enjoyed by us but also be a good fit for a Red Fronted macaw.

I thought of rescuing a parrot that needs a home but after reaching out to my local parrot rescue the communications have not continued. I believe most rescues want to work with people locally so reaching out to rescues out of state are probably not going to be welcomed either.

So I am beginning my research on a second parrot for us. To keep balance in the home I would like to know what types of parrots get along with RFM's with cages in the same room side by side. I believe it is healthier for a household to at least have two parrots so that when they have to be in cages alone they can have each other to see and talk too for their own companionship. RFM babies are very loud and I think the second parrot will need to be tolerant of RF noise levels. I will admit Valentino is not as loud as I expected him to be but he has some strong lungs. LOL.

I would love to hear from other RFM owners that have multiple parrots in their households with what works for them and what does not work for them. Please, tell me all about your experiences.

Thank you so much!!

I don't have an RFM, but I know someone who does, and who has several macaws, plus an african grey.

Not only that, but she has also adopted two macaws out of state - one from a rescue.

As well as another person who started out with one RFM, and now has 3 RFM's and a Greenwing. I remember when Merlin (first RFM) was young and their only parrot! And I recall them getting their second parrot, Arial the GW. Didn't hear from them much after that (their owner left the forum we were on - but I still enjoy looking at their website!)

Those are the two that I can think of off the top of my head... and I'm sure several people out there have a mix of parrots along with an RFM.
