African Grey - Zola
Hi everyone,

I have a congo grey and a sun conure and I've been growing chillis for them in the back yard but now there are catterpillers and bugs destroying the bushes.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows a safe and organic way to get rid of the pests? I don't want ANYTHING that could harm my flock so please only post if you already use the recipe for your own little ones.

Thanks for the help.

Hi jay and welcome to the forum, one of the most common non toxic methods that comes to mind is the use of dishwashing detergent mixed with water, about a teaspoon or so in a spray bottle applied every week to ten days, depending on the weather, if it rains you can re-apply after all is dry again, Dawn dishwashing soap is eco friendly as its biodegradable :) Just make sure to rinse all veggies thoroughly before serving.

Hi Jay and welcome. Bobby has given you a good suggestion.
Another form of nature's insecticide that instantly kills flying and crawling insects on contact but does no harm to mammals or birds is the dried and crushed flowers of the Pyrethrum Plant. This brown powder will kill or stun the insects the moment it touches them but does no harm to pets when sprinkled on their coats. It is a member of the daisy family and a beautiful flower that will look nice in any garden or flower bed. The dried powder lasts for only a few days. You can extend its use throughout the year by freezing fresh flower heads in zip-lock bags and drying and crushing them as needed.
While I live in an apt. and cannot grow for my TAG Rosie I did learn about this method in a parrot nutrition class I attended. I have no personal experience with this method.
