I am thinking, or shall I say I have been thinking, that maybe, just maybe, my calling in life may be to somehow have a parrot rescue. Right now it is simply a dream, but we will be moving away from apartment life very soon, and sometimes I think that, you know, why not? Right? I know that every parrot can't be saved, and I know how spendy it would be, but just to have a few rescue parrots, or to foster a couple until they find homes. Just a thought for far into the future.

I think that would be GREAT! You can never have enough "rescues" whether it be for Parrots, reptiles, or dogs... Of course we would all love to do the same but if you have the opportunity to do so, go for it! Also, thank you for having such a big heart.

I took a baby bird in to a rescue today, and will donate money next time I get paid, but while I was there I felt that I should volunteer there. I am still debating that obligation.

That would be great! Maybe you could just buy birds from craigslist, make them happy & healthy again, and then sell them again (this time making sure that the owners know what their doing!). I'd love to volunteer at our local shelter (they have dogs, birds, small animals, and cats) but you have to be 17 :(

I am thinking it may be a good idea. We have a parrot rescue close by me, I am really not a fan. They haven't adopted any parrots out since as far back as I can remember, 2002? and when I went to take classes they offered so I could volunteer they were very rude. That was a very long time ago, and I was only about 18, but they rubbed me the wrong way. So I thought maybe taking in a few parrots at a time wouldn't be a bad idea. Thanks for your support. I am going to look more into this.

Before jumping feet first into something like that, contact your local rescue center and see about fostering a few birds and see how that goes. Just because you may be moving into a house doesn't mean that you can open a rescue center, first you have to check zoning laws, how many pets are allowed where you will be living. Is there enough property between you and your neighbors, if not then the noise will force a show down between you and the local law. Then there's the profit or non-profit situations. Any time I read about someone wanting to open a rescue center reminds me of the old saying "The road to hell is paved with good intentions".

I used to build wooden ship models as a hobby. Then I got into commissions for people that wanted me to build a ship model for them. Well, after a few commission jobs, it quickly took the fun out of the hobby and I gradually gave up that hobby. I built like 20 models over a 10 year period and sold most, but still have a few that I kept.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but mainly playing devils advocate here. But if you are determined and if it can be done where your located I say go for it. There is always a need for a GOOD rescue center.

I'm not jumping in head first into anything, and if you read my posts you would see that I said a "FEW" parrots, not a ton. I am not looking to open a full out rescue center, and FYI we are looking at a home in the country. I know what I can handle, and by that I mean a few. Thank you.

I've already started plans on mine! Great minds think alike? I already have the building (ownership is a few years off but it's a definite) & have started researching the renovations needed for an open aviary. I have to say getting my Amazon has made life worth living & I can't think of a better thing to spend my life pursuing.

Con has opened my eyes to parrots and I really want to volunteer or have my own rescue as well. The only thing that keeps me from doing it is I don't own a house and I have no experience with bad habits in birds. Otherwise I'd be all for it too!

I think that sounds great! If I had the time and resources, I'd love to do it too.

It is a wonderful idea although fostering can be a tough thing to do. You have to be very careful not to become too attached. I work with two organizations doing small animal fostering and my bf used to be president of our local humaine society. He was responsible for having the gas chamber shut down at the spca shelter but was voted off the board because of the way he went about getting it done. We have taken in lots of cats and ferrets and both our birds are rescues/rehomed animals two of our cats were fosters we adopted.

The problem we have is that it can be really hard to let some of the fosters go. I know my first pair of ferrets i fostered i fell in love with and it broke my heart to see them go i still miss them. But i had just lost my job due to my disability and was in no financial position to adopt them. i cried for days over it.

It is a very nice thing to be a foster home for animals just be sure you can handle them leaving cause it can be hard. It gets easier the longer you do it but at first it can be heartbreaking even though you know they are going to a really good forever home.

If you think you can handle it i say do it. I get a lot of enjoyment out of it and it gives me a sense of accomplishment and its nice to give these animals some love that they often come in needing a lot of. I usually try to make them some kind of special thing to take along with them as well so they have something of their own to take along to their new home.

We definitely need lots of kind hearted people to take in fosters and give them some love
