Is it normal for a parrot just to chill on a perch or on the top of the cage with his eyes closed for some time? He is just sitting there, sometimes he will preen and groom, of course he was very active earlier. Input appreciated.

I'd say it depends on the bird. It would not have been normal for my Blue Crown conure. My Nanday and amazon are most active in the evening though and often take little naps during the day. The BC was a normal bird who got up at dawn and went to bed at dusk. Right now the 2 evening clowns are still going wild and it's after 9pm. The zon is upside down and flapping his wings and the conure is hanging sideways between 2 toys.

Is this a new bird for you? You may just need to learn each other's routines. And it's always a good idea to get a vet check on a new bird.

My bird does this in the evenings. She'll sit up there and do exactly what yours does.In the daytime though it's the exact opposite:D

Kazi does that after breakfast and until around noon or 1pm, after that he's generally pretty active until about an hour after dinner, then he starts getting sleepy and I get his cage ready for him to go into for the night by 7:30.

Amigo does this after he eats in the morn for about 20 mins. He comes in around 1:00pm for some lunch and then naps for up to an hour and a half. Does your bird tuck his foot up while he/she is doing this? That's a sure sign of a nap!

I think my Nanday got this way because I used to be at work during the day. So when I got home she wanted to spend every moment with me that she could. And the amazon is probably the same way because his former owner was at work during the day. It's almost 10, which is their normal bed time and the zon is chowing down on pellets and the Nanday is playing with toys. As soon as piggy is done eating though I will turn off the bird lights and then they will settle down and start getting ready for bed.

My zon is especially inactive in the morning. Right at first he's active when he wants to get up and have his breakfast. And then he is pretty much a lump until lunchtime. I know now why zons have that reputation as couch potatoes, lol! I was worried about him at first being used to conures who are little spazzy things in comparison. But, this just seems his normal routine.

I have a tiel & a gcc.
The tiel likes to eat, preen & sleep, with about 5 minutes of playing during the day. He normally spazes out on his bell toy and that's it for activity. He takes multiple naps during the day.
My gcc goes non-stop from morning til bedtime. Playing, eating, chatting. I've never once seen her nap; ever.

I think all birds definitely have their own routines, just as unique as their personality. As long as their healthy, no worries.

I am positive you have nothing to worry about. You mentioned that your bird was very active earlier. Like us humans, after being active, we need to rest, exactly the same with birds.
