I am planning to get a panama amazon. I still have some questions.
1.How about their talkability(VS yellow naped, double yellow head, blue fronted)?
2. Are they moody like other Zons?

My understanding is that the Hot 3 (Napes, Double Yellow Heads, BF) are considered the best talkers, but are also the moodiest.

Maybe you would like a Yellow Crown? I've only had mine for 3 weeks, but from the research I've done it sounds like they are considered good talkers but much easier going.

So far in 3 weeks I've heard from him: singing opera (hilarious!), barking, meowing, funny cartoon noises, "yabba dabba do!", "hello", "hello, dear", "come here", "I love you", "Wuv you", "Wuv you wittle bear", "Hi" and a very loud, annoying alarm sound. He also went "glug, glug, glug" one day when watching me drink water. Undoubtedly in 28 years he has learned more than this and I just don't know yet. I think yesterday he may have said my name already, but I wasn't certain.

But, with any bird it can be hard to guess talking ability. My Blue Crown conure was the loudest, clearest talker I've ever had, but she never learned that many words and phrases. My Nanday conure is sometimes easy to understand and sometimes very difficult. But, she has surprised me with complete sentences, and often uses a ton of words I had no idea she knew. So even though she doesn't talk that often, sometimes in the right situation I get something completely shocking out of her.

Of all the amazons Panamas are my favorite, the best talker i've ever had was a hen Pan.The only Pan i have that doesn't talk was raised as a breeder bird in a outside aviary and she only mimics a few things her mate says. Any amazon could become aggressive when harmonal but Pans seem to be less prone to this issue. If you have the chance to get a young panama that seems to like you I'd jump on it with both feet, especially if a hen. Is it a local bird? I'd love to meet some other breeders in our area.

He is a local breeder. I used to see him before. He has two of them right now. I really want to get one.

So am i ,Palmetto really, PM his info if he doesn't mind or give him mine.

After researching panamas in my area ,i'll give you this advice. Not all amazons sold as Panamas are, many are Yellow Crown or hybrids (YC x Pan). Not saying a YC couldn't be a great pet, but there's a reason people selling YCs call them Panamas. Real Panamas are hard to find. One site i checked had three pictures(from different breeders) of babies being sold as Pans, done of them appeared to be true Panamas. I'd research Panamas very carefully before buying one. I'd be glad to send you a picture of what one looks like if you wish. Edit,,i do not have any baby Panamas for sale all of my babies for the next several years have been promised to someone, there's a long waiting list.

Here is a photo he sent to me. He doesn't have a website. I got my Blue-Fronted from him before. He is a pretty nice guy.

They do look like Yellow Crowns. I must have the wrong idea of what a Pan looks like. I will look them up myself just because I want to know.

My Yellow Crown has a red stripe on each wing, but it was hard to see from the pic if those Pans did as well. In the case of my bird I was told it was a YC, and I looked them up and did some reading before I went to see him, and thought yes, that looks like the pics I looked at.

If you want to see him, someone posted the pic from my photobucket on Wenz's thread since I was having all kinds of issues trying to post a pic myself. And there are a couple more on my photobucket link if you want to look at them. He did ham it up for the camera, lol! Here I was worried that camera might freak him out, especially since he had only been here a few days and he went wild to give me funny pics instead. It's the pic with the displaying zon with the magenta colored walls behind the cage.

YC and Pa look similar. However, according to my reading, the most difference on lower beak and cere, Yc has a dark cere and lower beak while Pa has a horn-colored one.

Yes the light colored (horn color) lower beak and cere, also almost white feet (like DYH), Here's a vid of one of my Panamas (Kong ) and Mickey a Red Lored ( who had been cage bound for 20 yrs),m notice the color of feet and beak . RLA also has similar features.

I hope he/she is a great bird!!! I am still torn between a panama or a Greater Vasa!!
