My wife and I are preparing our home...about 11 weeks before the newest addition gets here. I am a check list type of guy and want to make sure I am not missing anything. We are getting a blue and gold macaw. He/she hatched early July..

I've also got an array of toys that I plan on placing in the cage before I purchase within the next week or two. I haven't purchased the cage yet because I am still deciding on which. AND..I am up for a significant raise that I will either get or not get on Friday of this week.

The breeder will be weaning him from Kaytee formula to fruits and veggies, pellets, and seeds.

My local birds shop has a nice travel carrier as well.

How am I doing?

You didnt say anything about your experience with macs.

You may want to get some books and read lots of the post on here about macs. They can be a handful.

I've read Companion to Parrot Behavior as well as Well Behaved Parrot. Both by Mattie Sue Athon.

I grew up with an African Grey that my uncle raised. I'm 26 and Warrior (the Grey) is 21). This is my first Mac!

I handful I am aware of! Which is why I am machine gunning questions to everyone lol

I dont know anything about Macaws other than apparently they are a lot like large conures haha (not exactly what birdman says but close enough lol). But i do understand the excitement! I was the same way with the checklists before i got my green cheek conure home. Everything was set up and ready I had the cage filled with toys and perches i had his food and everything i could think of. After all of that was done all i had to do was wait, which was terrible... So i started reading through the archives on this forum to see problems other people have had with my species and what advice was given. I spent a lot of time on the training forums and behavior forums as well reading through anything that MIGHT pertain to me and my bird when he got home. I guess what im rambling about is just to suggest you keep researching before he/she comes home. It makes the time pass by faster and proves to be useful down the line!

Of the two, I'd go with the Silverado cage...

Everything else works.

I disagree with some of Mattie Sue Athen's observations. Height dominance being one of them.

Biggest thing with macs is giving them structure and boundaries, and socialization. The biggest problem I see with macaws is they (1) aren't bite pressure trained, and (2) just don't get handled enough. (Those two things probably go hand in hand.) Be firm on your boundaries. The bird will respect them, and won't misbehave.

Beyond that, it's just playtime with these guys. They are playahaulics...

With as much as you're already interacting with him, I'm sure you'll do fine.

What's your take on height dominance?
