Over or Under

I am definitely an OVER as Plum will sometimes go to play with it, fold it back incase there's something good lodged down there. I also have lightweight cardboard under the paper but this stems from the days when he chewed like mad. Ignores it now. Makes life so easy on the days you decide he needs cleaning out three times in one day.

We don't even use our grate. We paper the bottom tray and leave the grate out. Our boy loves to hang out and eat his millet at the bottom of his cage. (No worries as he poops on just one side.) He loves to be down low. He runs around on the floor all the time when out of the cage as well. Never knew birds did that!

Oh most definitely 'under' here at our house. Makes cleanup SO much easier. :)

My crew does play on the grate sometimes, and if I lined that the poop would be on it, and I don't want them to necessarily have poopy-feet and/or feathers. :54:

I never even considered puttng the paper on top of the grate. The whole Idea is to keep the bird from rooting around in the crap and possibly getting a crop infection from ingesting old/contaminated food.

Putting the paper on top of the grate kinda defeats the purpose of having one doesn't it?!

Now I do put shredder toys on top of the cage, and play boxes on top of the grate for them to play in and shred...

I loved that TP article. I'm definitely an OVER person, on both types of paper, EXCEPT in the female lovebird's cage. She's a creamino and since she wouldn't stop until every piece of that paper was pinked and stuffed into her rump feathers, she would be BLACK with newsprint. So, she's an under, and I HATE scrubbing that grate.

Only if you don't like cleaning LOL and leave old / contaminated food in the cage?

In my small bird cages, I do over AND under. All the big guys are under.

The stuff they drop that gets pooped on was what I was referring to. With a bird you end up cleaning either way, regardless, several times a day. Since mine aren't caged, it's floors around cages more than the bottom of the cage...

I do both lol I put papers on top of the grate to catch the daily food that gets thrown out of the dishes ....nope- don't wanna eat that or that or that...just throwing this for fun....

and it also catches the poop from their popular roosting spots...

The paper in the underneath pans catches whatever the top papers don't
