Hi rita1 Welcome!
Do you mean an aviary bred caique or a companion caique?
Why would you want to put them outside? Just curious re: your situation before I ponder my thoughts aloud.
Also I will add to this, would you like to be kept outside all winter? I don't think it's nice and potentially can cause harm to the bird. We're not exactly a country suited for parrots
i have a 14 feet aviary and thought i could put that to good use and have a couple of rescue caique, i have kept one before inside the house and it bonded with me which was brilliant, but attacked anyone else, especially visitors.
i saw a lovely outside aviary with misting to mimic forest conditions, it was in America this lovely housing and i thought that was fantastic. i know living in England i would have to heat the aviary.
i would still have the caique in the house to interact with them.
my last one had an indoor aviary which my husband built for me in the lounge it was 8 feet by 6 feet so she had lots of room, but i must admit she spent all her time out, except at night.
i don't think my hubby would build me another aviary indoors.
do you think that its not ok for the caiques to live outside.
We have some pretty unreliable weather to contend with and all year round would not be fair and you risk losing the birds without spending a heck of a lot of £'s providing heat etc, etc.
FYI My friend has an aviary and she uses it as a treat for her RB2 who may use it for a pleasant afternoon outside.
Would it not be a little lonely for one little bird outside on its own? Caiques are generally canopy dwellers, spending most of their time in the tops of trees, foraging and playing so can see the attraction of giving some time outside on the right day, I would think that several birds would need to be kept for this to be successful though.
You would need to be mindful of predators and some of the Magpies we get can be downright aggressive if they think something is dinner.
oh that's a shame that you think it would be unkind to keep them outside. i was hoping to keep 2 older rescue birds that will bond with each other, but also have them in the house. my hubby is retiring in a few months and i only work 4 hours so i was hoping to keep them in the aviary until i come home from work and then have them in the house, but go back to the aviary at night with heating in the colder months. the aviary is completely wind and shelter proof with a shed attached to it, it has perspex over the wire and wood all around the side, it was a cattery but i converted it, so no wind can get in or draughts, i have sat inside it for many hours over the years, i used it as a ferret house when i use to rescue ferrets many years ago.
Ok there could be some mileage here. Probably be better if they came in at night, be cheaper for you and probably safer for them from theft and predators. Do you not want any interaction with the birds?
Obviously it would need a pretty good clean down after cats and ferrets, have you heard of F10? It is not guaranteed that two strange birds to each other will bond btw. There could be some right scraps.
no i understand that two strange birds may not bond, but i was planning on two that are already together. also the aviary has been empty for awhile.
i have rescued many animals over the years, and have bonded many, it is something that has to be done very slowly, with the animals having time to see each other but not be able to get to one other, it does work, some quicker then others.
As a daytime opportunity to fly, chew, squawk, forage it is brilliant. As said not keen on the night bit as stated, it is when most thefts of birds occur btw. They do kinda advertise their presence don't they? Give it the clean of it's life and then give it a go. Please stay on here as we would love to hear how it goes. Sorry for the negativity, just trying to save a bird from unhappiness or death.
Ps have you access to some bird friendly tree branches that would make a brill playground?
thank you for all your advice.
it was a plan that maybe i will have to rethink.
my other caique use to sit outside with me in the garden she never did fly off, not very good at flying, she use to walk and climb most of the time.
i am wondering if my hubby would let me convert the spare room for them to have, not keen on cages i like them to wonder around if possible. don't mind a cage for them to sleep in but not to stay in.
this forum is very helpful.
it might take me months and months to settle on what i will eventually will do and what bird i will get. i like the caique as mine was a very quiet bird, i did look at the conure but was told they can be very noisy, but have never kept one so i don't know.
if he's okay with it birdy rooms are awesome. I think as something for a warm day the aviary could be really fun for them but yeah our weather is just too unpredictable for exotic animals (except ringnecks)
sounds like he hasn't been trained well enough yet! All of us men need to be well aware when we sign up to being a partner we take along the obligation of agreeing with any and all decisions/whims put forth
my wonderful hubby has said yes. i waited until we were on holiday, we are in Madeira at the moment.
but they will have to go into a cage in the spare room.
now i will get the biggest cage i an find. any recommendations on cages please.
i was showing him some videos of caique bathing and it bought back lovely memories of Kiki when we had her.
i have to wait until next year, as i am hatching 24 chicken eggs for my coop, i have a 60 Feet area where my chickens live. i also have 10 quails that live in a eglu.
so any good ideas on cages would be brilliant. thank you.
I suggest the largest cage you can afford/fit! All of the ones there should be okay. Out of them if you have the money for it eh Raleigh corner cage would be amazing for a pair of Caiques giving them more than enough space for when they're in the cage
thank you for your reply. i will deffo go for a nice size one, i like the ones with a play pen on top. i would want them out as much as possible so they will be getting a stand as well. i will start collecting toys for them.
