So my 3 guys are out of their cages almost 12 hours a day everyday. They do go back in their room when I leave to get kids from school or when I run to the store or whatever. They are never in their cages for any long length of time really.

Well I am having my 5 foot glass sliding patio door replaced. This job will take 4-6 hours if all goes as planned. My Mac flys and when I say fly.... He goes room to room and even sometimes up and down my stairs, my conure has full feathers but hasn't learned to fly yet, my Quaker is clipped.

Any suggestions for handling this without locking my birds up? I do have a harness for the Mac, although he has never been in it for that many hours.

Thanks!

I truly only see 2 options.

1. You keep him in the harness while your door is being replaced, or
2. You keep him in the cage for that duration.

Please don't risk letting him out WITHOUT a harness while there is no door, you'd never forgive yourself if your baby got scared and decided to explore the great outdoors.

Mine are outside the cage birds as well, but I would cage them for this one. No telling what the strangers/making strange noises would do that might spook them.

They may not like it, but they will live.

Conversely, if they get out, and get lost....

So, I wouldn't risk it.

Could you not just shut off access to that particular area if the house if you are concerned about caging them? I personally would cage them as it seems the safest option in my eyes although if they are likely stress out and injur themselves it obviously isn't the best option. If you were to shut off part of the house for them be sure to either lock doors or put up big bold signs on doors to remind everyone to be careful when opening and closing these doors.

I will not risk them being out and a 5x7 foot gaping hole in my house. I was just seeing if anyone had any ideas. I know the birds will be pretty mad staying in their room and cages all day but if that is what it takes.... then that is what will be done.

I wish I had an outdoor option, but not right now I don't. My little birds could go upstairs with supervision but my Mac knows how to get downstairs in a matter of seconds.

I just hope its nice outside as it is still winter here in Colorado. LOL

Thanks for the suggestions. guess it will be a sad birdy day.

Well today is the day... Nero is harnessed up and the sound of the saw is freaking him out. He wont leave my side. poor guy. Razzbin and Ocha really dont seem to mind the sounds. 1 out of 3 isnt too bad. Ahhhhhh 4-6 hours and its only been 20 minutes. I might go crazy before the day is done.

Well, the good news is that after today, as the day wears on it won't bother him as much. And he will be less sensitive to this and other loud scarey things after it's all said and done.

A little reassurance at this point goes a long way.

Well all went well. Nero was harnessed the whole time with only minor picking at the harness. He did spend the entire time on my shoulder as I did house work and chatted on the phone. The sounds of the wet/dry vac and saw freaked him out but he did good.

Very good point about the exposure to new things, I do take him places and for walks... this was just a good change in the home lesson.

Thanks for the support!
