Dino - White Bellied Caique
Hi everyone! We just brought home a baby White Bellied Caique about 2 weeks ago and he has already stole our hearts. We met him at the breeder when he was just over 1 month old and visited every week until he was ready to come home so 3 months of visiting, clearly we love him lol. We named him Dino after the Flintstone's pet dinosaur since parrots in general remind us of dinasours and this little guy acts more like a dog than a bird :)

Any who, we have parrot experience from having owned a cockatiel before but Caiques are very different to us. So far it's going smoothly, we have him stick trained and he is getting the hang of being potty trained. I would be great to get some input from you guys with more experience as to what to expect with a baby and if there is anything in particular I should be watching out for>

Also, he has a tendency of turning every shirt I have into a rag full of holes lol. So far I am just avoiding the problem by wearing shirts I don't care for but is there a way of getting him to stop putting holes in them?

Thank you and I'll try to post a few pics of him soon :)

Congratulations on Dino. He sounds so adorable! Caiques are beautiful birds. We definitely need some pics, please.

As far as "holey" shirts go, I also use old ones because my Sun chews holes through anything that I wear. Don't think there's a solution for it.

Dino sounds adorable! How nice that you've been getting to know him since he was only a month old. I think caiques are so beautiful, and from what I've heard, most are real characters.

You obviously know what you're doing since Dino is stick trained and being potty trained already. I would introduce a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables while he's still so young. Caiques are high energy birds, I would think they would enjoy training sessions. Most of us have a collection of holy shirts that have been washed and put through the rinse cycle too many times to count. Young birds use their beaks to explore their world, it's normal behavior for most parrots. Dino will probably find something he enjoys more than shirt shredding as he gets older, until then, you can gently distract him and reward him when he cooperates.

Seems like the holey shirts are a common thing that I'll just have to deal with lol oh well these little guys are worth it.

I am currently trying to switch him to a pellet diet but he is being pretty stubborn about it. He is currently on nutri berries after I took him off a seed and nut diet from the breeder but he is refusing to go for the pellets. Right now his food is 50/50 nutri berries and pellets. Any tips to encourage him to start eating them?

Thanks!

LOVE the photos--thank you so much for sharing them! Dino is as cute as can be! Wishing you all many years of happiness together! (Plus hole-y shirts!)
:)

Holey and "surfed" shirts are just another symptom of Caique love...
Develop a stash of surfing and poopy shirts!!
