So, today when I was at the animal shelter I noticed one of my nails was cracked a bit below the quick. I didn't think too much of it, I was just gonna cut it when I got home. It was cracked pretty far down though, so it wasn't like I could have just pulled it off. Well, I kept walking dogs, and then I took out this one dog named Magie, and he was just a little, but hyper little thing (around 30 pounds?)! Anyways, I opened up his kennel, went to slip the martingale collar over his head, and he rushed out of the kennel so fast, and hit into my hand, that he tore my finger nail off! Talk about hurt! And at first, before I saw it, I thought he had just bent it back, but nope, half of my nail was completely gone, and it was bleeding. It didn't really hurt after the initial "pulling off", so I just shrugged it off and we took Magie out. Then I decided I should probably do something about it, so I went inside to get a bandaid and completely grossed out Frank the volunteer coordinator. :p Guess he had never seen anyone that had tore off half a nail before :D.

So anyways, yeah, that was my fun experience of the day, and now it hurts a lot more than when I first did it!

Yes...parrot caregivers around the world are all going ouch without the benefit of film. Listen that area is very vascular and you did say that it bled, but that is one wound you should monitor for heat, redness and other signs of infection. And while I am dishing out unasked for advice (sorry! ) have you had a recent tetanus shot? This would be a good excuse to get one and it would also protect you from pertussis (whooping cough ). Okay ...really sorry about that. Offering unsolicted advice is an occupational hazard of both motherhood and being a nurse.

Haha, sure you don't want pictures Ben? :p

And thanks Bogo1. :) I am keeping an eye on it. Right now I have a band-aid on it with some neosporin. And right now I'm on antibiotics for another infection, so I'm hoping it aids in keeping this wound infection free as well. And I'm all good with my tetanus shot. :) That was one of the requirements before I was even allowed to walk dogs at the shelter was to make sure I had my tetanus shot.

She was walking a dog. Its got to be tails..

OUCH is right.... I know how you feel. I did that several years ago.
Take care of it and be sure to watch it for infection.

Take care of that wound! I'm very healthy, but picked up a nasty case of MRSA (Methicili-resistant Staph Aureus) that put me in the hospital for 5 days. Don't know the source, but I've learned never to dismiss even a harmless-appearing scratch!!
