Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
I am up at 4:30 am every work day ( and most weekends too). And I am out of the house by 6:00AM. Right now, my wife uncovers Salty around 9-10AM when she gets up, and he is in and out of his cage all day. I get home around 6:00PM and play and trick train and eat with Salty til 8:30PM, when its nite nite time.

Heres the question - Will it mess with his sleep cycle if I were to get him up with me at 4:30 ( eat b'fast, shower with me, get dressed) and put him back into his cage til the wife gets up. I'd still put him to bed around the same time, 8:30PM. I figure he can nap in the AM between when I leave and the wife gets up. What is eveyones opinions?

Hi, hope this comes out OK, touch of migraine today.
You don't tell us how Salty is with the current routine, is he happy with it?
Heard of the saying "if it's not broke don't fix it"?
You could do this and it'll be absolutely fine with Salty, he takes to it like a duck to water.
I guess it's you missing him in the mornings???
IMHO occasionally but not every day.
From experience Plum is not keen of being disturbed early and quite often tells hubby so! He don't mince his words either!
It could set off behaviour you don't want as a result.
You will make more noise getting ready - is Mrs Wrench OK with this? Salty may not want to nap and want company after you have left for work?

Parrots are incredibly adaptable. :) However, and this is strictly my own opinion, I wouldn't wake him up that early. I feel it's important for our fids to get a good night of uninterrupted sleep, of no less than 8 hours.

Sure, he may not mind being woken up, and yes, he may have to take several naps throughout the day to get his sleep in, but as plumsmum so nicely said: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." :)

I'm going to go with the flow here.

My life has been much the same as yours over the years and I have avoided waking the family, especially when it is naturally dark outside.

The only exception that I make to this is when I am leaving on a Business Trip, commonly gone for three weeks when I go. Then, I will make my Amazon part of that process. I found that it sets a start point. Also, when I get home, regardless of time, I do the same, which sets the end point. Over the years my Amazons have not always happy about it, but I find they are more stable while I am gone and more happy when I get home. Yes I wake the whole household, not always the favored individual, but in the long run its just safer. Think about it for a bit. I found long ago, that sneaking into the home late at night just never works!

I am also up at 4:30 and leave for work at 6:00 . BB is awake and gets a treat that time of morning. Normally about 5 when i grab second cup of coffee . Most of the time he is back dozing when I leave. His cage is in the active part of the house so no way not to wake him.

Now James is off work every Friday. He does not get up that early but said he can hear BB about 7 am when his light comes on. He also said he will catch him napping .

Weekends we sleep until about 7 and i have heard him playing in his cage before we get up. Its been our schedule for over a year and working fine so far.

His light goes off at 6pm ( for now ) and he is on his high perch most of the time a few min before it goes off

These hours might seem nuts but it works for us. Our routine :)

If the fids have been sitting there waiting for you for three weeks I'm not surprised LOL :)
