Ricco - Goffin's Cockatoo
So... One more day. That's it! Actually, less than that. I go tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM sharp to pick up my baby boy!

Any last minute tips, tricks, and suggestions? :)

Also, one question: I've heard from a lot of people that Cockatoos really settle much better if you hand feed them for a little while after you bring them home, even if they are adults. Is there any truth to this? If so, should I do it as soon as he gets home or wait a few days until he has settled? I don't plan on taking him out for at least a couple days. Just sitting with him and reading to him, singing to him, etc. Letting him get used to things around here.

I'm sorry, not much 'too info, but I'm so happy for you! Congrats!

Congratulations :D!!! you will have a wonderful friendship for a very long time :). You can spoon feed him some warm (not hot) food such as plain oatmeal cooked with water. good luck :)

You can spoon feed them any kind of mash if you're interested, but I'm not 100% convinced this is necessary. YAY!!! You better post LOTS of pictures!!

Today is the day!!!!!!! Post lots of pictures!!!!! Good luck!!!!!

Very exciting !!!!!! Post pictures as soon as you can , when he is settled in of course :)
Fun times ahead girl :). Your in for a wild ride , lolol.

Go get him girl!! I'm ready to get my little BE girl myself. The wait has not been bad but I ordered her Avian Adventure Grand play top along with perches, rope swings, ladders, toys, ect Wendsday and starting to get excited. Then I saw a video of her flying around the room with two pionus, a Alexander, and a cute Goffin. That really made me want to get her. Funny thing is in the video the Alexander and pionuses were screaming their head off. Aerial and the little Goffin were quite for the most part. Hope she stays that way!!

HAHAHAHAH gotcha ;)

Okay, everyone!

Ricco is HOME! I'm pretty sure I'm keeping his name. He loves to say it too much to change it!

We left this morning around 5:45AM. Whew, that was fun. I was supposed to drive there, but I forgot to take my Prozac yesterday (LOL) so I couldn't. So my SO got to drive the whole way! Lucky her! We had some car trouble (of course) and didn't get there til about 9, instead of 8:30 as planned.

When we got there, we went back and I said Hi to him, etc. I had the carrier all ready to go, but his previous owner wasn't quite ready to part with him. They took at least half an hour to say goodbye. I felt bad because you could tell they really didn't want to give him up, but she kept saying "I don't want to give him up, but I know he'll be so much happier with you guys." :(

After all that, and getting the paperwork out of the way, we finally got the cage loaded in the car and they said their final goodbyes. He went right into the carrier, no protesting at all. Just kept dancing and saying "Ricco!" We loaded him into the car and strapped him in and off we went to the vet.

When we finally got to the vet (we were late, but they were so nice about it), we filled out paperwork and waited. Finally, we got called back and he came right out of the carrier for me. He stepped up after a bit of protesting and, although I tried to keep him off, he got right up to my shoulder. Sigh. LOL. I finally got him down and made him stay on my hand. I got him on the perch to be weighed and... ONLY 205grams?! He's so small! I thought for sure he was underweight, but when the vet came in and felt his keel bone she said he was OVERweight!!! So I guess he's just a tiny too?!

Anyway, she decided to do blood tests in a few weeks because he was stressed out. She did a beak and nail trim and he screeeeeamed bloody murder! But I was shocked by his scream... Not because it was loud but because it was so QUIET! I guess I was expecting his scream to be like my friend's U2's scream...? Idk, but his scream is nothing. LOL. She did do a gram stain because his poop was weird and pink colored? She said he has some yeast and fungus (I think about the fungus part) from being on seed and gave me some Baytril and another one that starts with an F... Can't remember. She also gave me some pain meds because he kept looking at his foot all weird like. So, she thought it might hurt or something. She said if he acts like he needs them to give them to him, but otherwise he should be alright.

After we got done at the vet, (which was way cheaper than I thought it would be!), we went out to the car and got strapped in again and off to home we went! The whole way home he entertained us by singing, dancing, and talking in his carrier! He's SUCH a great little trooper! He did scare us a couple times by screeching, but it was just because it was so unexpected LOL.

The ride all went very smoothly, in fact the whole day did. We got home around 3:30PM and got his cage set up. I opened the carrier door and he stepped right up and went right into his cage for me. I went in there to check on him a bit ago and he made a little noise, put his crest up, and pushed his head against the bars so I could give him scritches. :) He's so perfect. I love him already!

I will post pics later!

Good for you for going directly to the vet. That is almost the perfect way to set up bringing home a new bird. If he's got a mild subclinical infection, his weight might go up after getting meds out of the way. Unfortunately, meds tend to make them feel really yucky, so appetite and weight might drop first before going up. My birds always have acted more like a sick bird during meds than they acted before. But then I've always gotten mine their meds before they got really sick. Baytril is vial tasting stuff, so expect him to shake his head and attempt to sling it all over the place. I hope she gave you some pointers on how to get meds into a bird.

Im so happy for you !! Give Ricco a hug from me and Yoshi (when he allows you to,lol )
I don't know how you felt with the owner having thoughts about not giving him up.
I would have run out with him , got in the car and left , tires screeching , lolol.
He's mine ! He's mine ! He's all mine ! lolol.

You will be a great parront , so don't worry :) Ricco is a very lucky man :)

Hey, everyone! Thanks :)

Last night went okay... He screeched for awhile when I turned the lights out, protesting. LOL. I decided to sleep on the couch because every time I would get to sleep he'd wake me up. So I left him alone last night, just for one night so he could get some good rest. He woke up at 7am this morning screeching lol. I went in and said hi to him, got him fresh food, etc. His droppings look sooo much better today! I think yesterday it was just from stress.

After that, I checked emails and such for awhile. Then I went in and got him out and tried to give him his medicine... Oh, boy, that was fun... I had to towel him. :( He didn't like it at all. Then I thought he hurt his mouth taking the meds because it looked like he was bleeding, but I didn't see much. I think it might have just been the Baytril because it's a pink/orange color. I'm not sure. :/ He has grabbed his beak a couple times, I really hope it didn't hurt him.

Anyway, after that I let him rest a bit. Then I decided to see if he'd like to come out and take a shower with me. He came right out and danced for me a bit. So I took him in the bathroom and he looked allllll around eagerly. I set him on his perch in there and he kept looking around and dancing. So I got undressed and turned the water on and he still seemed okay. So I put him on the shower rod and he seemed at ease, rubbing his beak on the bar, etc. I took a shower and he watched the water. I decided to see if he would come down and sit on his shower perch and he did. I let him sit there for awhile and then splashed a bit of water on him and he LOVED it! So I let him take a nice shower. Then to let him dry off, I took him outside for a bit. He loved that too! His feathers look WONDERFUL now compared to what they did. He really needed that bath! LOL

Now he's resting in his cage. One more question... Twice today when I've went to check on him he's been shivering with one foot up. Could he just be napping and/or cold? He was kept in a room that never had A/C before and now he has A/C... I was thinking he was just cold/stressed and that's what was causing the shaking. I guess I'll just keep watching him, but he's going back to the vet in a few weeks anyway and I can call and make the appointment sooner if I want to.

Thanks, guys!

P.S. I promise I'll post pics when I get the time lol.

he sounds like such a funny bird, you must be cracking up! he seems to be adjusting very nicely too :) Oh, and don't forget "too" post pics (get it!?) :D

He really is a great bird, I don't know how I got so lucky! Then again, we're just in he honeymoon phase... Hehehe. Right now he's taking a nap. :)

One foot up is similar to beak grinding. It means they're content, probably about to take a nap. Both Sugar and Loki sleep with on foot up and in, with their feathers puffed.

Sounds like things are off to a good start!

Yes, but what do you think the shivering is about ?
