Cosmo - Hahn's Macaw
I just received my perch scale from Amazon today. I ordered it Friday and with free 2 day prime shipping they delivered it to my house on a Sunday. :) When Cosmo went to the vet 3 weeks ago he weighed 120g. I just weighed him and he weighs 124g. So he is gaining a little weight, which is good. I wonder what the average healthy weight of a Hahn's is. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
- Chris

Harvey clocked in at 129 grams at the vets office. Not sure how much of that was his breakfast though!

I've seen a page that says 165 grams is about right, but it seems like that one had Hahn's and Noble's info on the same page, and I'm thinking that might be a little closer to the Noble's size?

Several online sources for Hahn's say 165g for a mature adult, so of course that means more or less. From all sources I've seen, the Noble subspecies is just under 200g (maybe 170-190)...

A young bird will still be filling out for the first year or so. I'm not sure about Hahn's in particular, but for example, I know that many Pionus don't attain full adult weight until about age 2.

Also, some individuals (like any living creature) just have a smaller frame than 'average'. Griffin is very noticeably small for his species, yet he is healthy, and his breast muscle is full and normal.

Yeah I would assume it would be depending on the bird. Just like people. Depends on height, bone structure, etc. As long as he's increasing weight and not losing it is a good thing. :) That's why I wanted to get the scale to start monitoring his weight.

The little reference chart that I have (no idea where I got it) says 135-165

So he's slowly getting there. :) Being a little over 3 months old. Would his weight significantly increase once all his feathers come in? He has a lot to come in yet.

He'll gain some, yes Chris. :) Most birds lose some weight after they just finish weaning. My guess is that when he's around 3 or 4 years old, he'll weigh more, perhaps around 140-150. Just guessing here.

Well after a week Cosmo has gained another 8 grams weighing at 132g. He constantly eats all day long and loves his fresh foods now in addition to new feathers coming in.
