Whenever my African Grey Bubbles is eating, I notice that sometimes she looks almost like she is choking. She will sit there and move her neck up and down as if she is trying to get whatever it is stuck there to pass down.

Took her to the vet just a couple weeks ago and she has a clean bill of health. Could it be that she is eating too fast and too much?

Scary!

Has anyone else experienced this? :(

I think I know what your talking about.

That's how the babies eat after a while, so whenever I'm feeding mushy foods to Kiwi will do that.

Is it just with mushy foods that she will do this? Because this happens when she is eating her pellets but she seems not to do this when she's eating her fresh veggie mix.

And it was just weird today because it was honestly like something was really stuck and she just kinda frozen in place trying to get it down. But then when it passed she went back to normal as if nothing even happened and is eating again.

Only with mushy foods, yes.

Not so sure. Is she drinking plenty of water? Maybe she's dehydrated?

Sometimes they "rearrange" their crops. Hard to say what it must feel like since we don't have a crop :) but maybe a piece of food that went down just doesn't feel right? Sometimes when this happens, I just go away so I don't get nervous about it, and when I come back later they're not doing it anymore. Hope it's only that, and nothing else.

Lilo did that a few times and I was terrified as well! But then I found out that she stuffed food into her water bottle and it blocked the water, so she just needed water. If you do have a water bottle for her, sometimes its a good idea to have bowl of water in there as well. That's just safe just in case.

My african grey also does this when she is eating mushy foods or foods I am feeding her off a spoon however she doesn't do it with normal food. Strange but I can see why it would be scary

After I read this post, I was researching birds rearranging their crops and I had no idea that it was an actual thing that they did. Strange little feathered things haha. I guess it would be nice if we could rearrange our stomachs some time!

Seems the most likely explanation, as she isn't sick otherwise and didn't seem to be too bothered by it afterwards. She just kept on eating.

She has a water bowl in her cage, and I tried offering her water when this was happening but she wasn't interested. Afterwards she did drink... out of my cup! And loves to eat ice cubes too haha.

LOL!! I'd like to rearrange my butt...:20:

My zon also does it sometimes. But I do think it is because he scoffs his food down like a starving wolverine sometimes, the silly boy ;) It seems harmless enough but quite scary if you're not used to seeing it!
