Ok she squeaks when she poops !

I have heard that birds can pass gas. My husband swears he heard Pepper "fart" the other day, and not her usual vocalizing "fart/burp sounds" LOL

Puck wiggles his butt and stays silent. Lol.

Why do we think that birds don't fart? All animals pass gas. It's a by-product of digesting vegetables. No?

One of my friends (who really is not a bird expert) heard somewhere that birds can't fart or burp. I find this hard to believe, especially about an animal that can throw up whenever it wants to.

I find that very interesting. I need to find the answer to that now , lolol. Maybe they cant take air in through their mouth , just their "nose" ? So then they have no "extra" air to expell ?
It's early and I only had one cup of coffee , sorry , lolol. :54:

They do pass gas. We aren't actually supposed to hear it though due to their very short digestive track. I guess it just kind of comes out little by little all the time.

That being said, my Grey has huge poops that get backed up in her and often makes audible noise when it comes out from gas being backed up as well. My vet is not surprised that Merlin farts. But, when I talked to her about hearing Rowdy do it, she was skeptical and thinks it was probably an imitation. However, Rowdy was asleep when it happened (it happened twice a few minutes apart). I also think if Rowdy learned this imitation, she would be doing it all the time, because Merlin imitates them all the time (and makes real ones for that matter). I heard Rowdy do it back in November as well and at that time did think she did an imitation. Now I'm not sure.

When Pixel takes her big morning poop, it sounds like a tea kettle. That's how I know its "safe" to let her out, even if I'm not watching her. Lol.

Still, I agree with Mare Miller; I know its natural and all... but the thought of a bird farting is still ridiculous to me. There's a definite disconnect there lol. Birds are supposed to be graceful and elegant (I know, yeah right. lol)

OK....I know what your talking about. My B&G Macaw "Merlin" Squeaked everytime he squatted to poop. It wasnt a "fart", it was the same sounding "squeak" everytime. I dont know why...just wanted you to my Macaw did this too.

I have a question that has been brewing in my mind for awhile...can birds breath through their mouths? Serious question, not joking. I'm guessing, yes. Only because sometimes in the summer when Amigo is outside on a hot day, his mouth will be open and looking like he is panting...true??

I've seen that panting also. In both wild birds and pet birds. At least it seems like panting to me. But, I don't know if they can breathe through their mouths. Maybe if you google "Ask an Avian Vet", they can tell you. That is a real website with avian vets answering questions.

ok, Bill...I just tried that "ask an avian vet" sight and they wanted 15$!! to answer my question!! I'm thinking I might not need to know that bad! I'll ask my vet next time I see her, thanks anyways!

Yes, if they are too hot, they will pant. And yes, they can breathe through their mouths. They must be able to because they do when you flush their sinuses. And the solution comes out through their mouth, so the nares, sinuses and mouth are connected.

Yup, ALL my birds are 'squeakers'! Kind of strange, really.
