Does anyone know if Oak wood is ok to use as a tree perch ?
On vacation at my families farm and found some realy good branches of an Oak tree. Was told the tree died due to a woodpecker nest made in the tree.
Thanks in advance. Texsize

Oak (except Tan Oak which should be avoided because of the VERY high tannin content) though there is some controversy about Oak it appears that the wood should be safe. the bark leaves and especially the acorns have much higher levels of tannins and should be avoided. While many bird species including many parrots regularly feed on nuts and vegetation that have levels of tannin much higher than oaks, it is unclear how their
bodies deal with the substance and it is therefore probably advisable to avoid high doses.

Tough sell on woodpecker's nesting in the tree, killing it. More likely an infestation of one or another wood cutting bug that the woodpeckers went after. Hence, the combination of both. If so, that will show-up quickly, once the bark is removed. If the bugs deep cut into the wood, you may have to heat the perches prior to taking them inside. Commonly, three hours at 150 - 175 degrees F. (per-heated) - i.e. cooking the bugs.
