Hi,
Does anyone know how to store nuts (hazlenuts, brazil nuts, etc.) that still have the shells on? The holidays are coming up and I would like to stock up when they are out in the stores. Otherwise, we can't get them with shells on here.
Thanks.:blue1:

I put them in Tupperware containers if purchased loose at Walmart. I was wondering if that was a no-no as well because who knows what is on them, but so far I have never had an issue.

Nuts have a very high fat content are can therefore go rancid rather quickly. Temperature, humidity, light all contribute to them going bad (and yes, IN the shell).

It is best to store them in a dark, cool place in either sealed plastic or glass. And it is perfectly all right to freeze them. Fresh nuts keep for about 4 months in the fridge and about 8 months in the freezer.

Thanks JerseyWendy as I wondered about that question also. They can only be found around the holidays where I live also or at bird shows.

I use ziplock bags, not the really big ones, maybe they are quart size and freeze a variety, I actually just ran out and had to buy a bag~

I will echo that - freezing is best, and do mark the bag with the date that batch was frozen! And freezing them in a ziplock means they will be flexible and not take up too much space if you have a small freezer!
