Years ago we owned quakers and cockatiels. We have since been thru fish and reptile phase, and are now considering birds once again. We also have 2 dogs. In all cases we were able to purchase animals and accessories from private breeders, or at shows, rather than the local (read expensive!) pet store.

Is it possible to purchase parrots this way? We are considering med to small size variety, as opposed to the larger breeds. Sun Conures, Caiques, Quakers are all being considered.

Suggestions?

Yes you can find breeders and bird shows. Also many cities have a bird rescue where you can adopt from. It really depends where you are as to what's available.

I bought my Quaker from a very small mom and pop type pet store for 150.00 he was 6 mo old and had been hand fed and hand tamed by the owner and his flight cage we bought from Ebay. My canary I bought from a local breeder and his cage from craiglist. My African red bellied which is my favorite parrot I bought from craigslist for 250.00 with cage, also 5 mo old and had been hand fed and hand tame. Then also ordered her a large flight cage from ebay. Then I bought my yellow sided gcc at 5 mo old also hand fed and hand tame from craigslist. I then bought her flight cage at our local bird show for 75.00. And yes you can buy birds at the bird shows and I have seen many beautiful healthy looking young parrots there especially at the fall shows. Welcome back to bird mania:D. Hope this helps:)

I am in Long Island NY. Any breeder tips or private sellers would be appreciated.

Sorry I forgot to say welcome to the forum and there are some other members on here from NY. I live in Fla. Good luck on your search.and by the way the cage I bought at the bird show for 75.00 was a better quality cage IMO that the ones I bought on ebay for 119.00 with free shipping:)

Try birdbreeders.com and follow along the guidelines on the web page. Another method would be to contact an avian (preferrably board certified) vet and ask for their input. They can most likely keep you clear of bad breeders at the very least.
