Hello, 3 weeks ago I bought a female Eclectus and took her home, her name is Loka.. I've been reading a lot these past weeks about Eclectuses, what to expect, do's and dont's. Everything seemed to progress well after one week she learned how to step up, she moved around in the house, explored and was very willing to socialize and interact with me.

Now we're three weeks in and all she does is sit in her cage (I always have the door open so she can come out) and eat, she goes out of her cage a couple of times a day and just walks around for 2 minutes and then goes back in. She isn't as willing to step up and she doesnt explore or fly around anymore. She is also very often in her "resting mode" where she stands on one leg. I try to talk to her and play with her but she just doesn't seem to care at all. She does not look sick, she eats and drinks regularly. One thing I've noticed though is that she doesn't seem to sleep much. She's awake at 1am and starts getting active at around 7pm.

I'm pretty lost about what to do and how to keep progressing with her.

Any ideas?

Hello, and welcome to Parrot Forum. Was Loki ever taken in for a veterinary checkup? If she's become somewhat lethargic, it could be a sign that something is wrong. Taking her in would be the best thing to do right now.

Also, do you have a gram scale? If so, you should take her weight. Weight loss is one of the earliest indicators of a problem.

Hey thanks for replying! I just got off the phone with the vet I have schedueled a check-up for Loka, also I can't get her to go onto the gram scale. I will keep trying :)

Congratulations on bringing home Loka. Glad you have booked her in to have a checkup. How old is she? If she is not young do you know her background?

I just ask, as when I adopted Pebbles she took a long time to settle.

Also one thing Gizmo (male) & Pebbles (female) have taught me, is how different their personalities can be. What motivates Gizmo does not necessarily motivate Pebbles. Also Gizmo wants to always be part of the flock, but Pebbles sometimes wants her personal space. The reason I mention this is, for me training sessions were important, but just spending time with them and getting to know their personalities was probably more important.

Best of luck, I hope Loka is fine, please keep us updated. Would love to see a picture of her.

Cheers,

Cameron

You're welcome!

Yeah, getting them to step onto a scale can be tricky. Some need to be trained to accept being put on that flat surface. You can cheat a little, though, by getting a bird scale with a perch attachment. Or, if your scale has a tare function, rigging a perch stand onto it.

Please keep us updated on how the vet visit goes.

Hello and thanks! :D She's so adorable! She is a little over one year old and has been here for three weeks. I try to train her as much as I can, several sessions a day.
She has learned to fly to me and to my girlfriend with a command, step up is also very natural, but she doesn't seem to want her treats anymore. I tried to give her fruits today but she only ate two bites of a banana, one grape and some seeds from her mix.

The guy I bought her from said that she is a very quiet and social bird which she has been until this week.

We'll see how the check up goes! I'll post updates and pictures! :)

Been trying today and she just does not want to step on the scale  anything that's flat is a no no for now :p, I will keep you updated!
