A sun conure, budgie. Miss my cockatiel Sam. See you someday I hope Sam! And my little girl Sky a budgie that passed away in 2007 Thunder my budgie passed away too last September. Miss you little budd
My sun has loose droppings that the vet gave me something called Nolvasan for. She said to dilute well 1 Tbsp per gallon of water. She said to have him drink this until he is better. Has anyone ever heard of this stuff? I can't find any into on it being used for this purpose but only as a disinfectant.

Thanks!

This drug is an ani fungal sort of like nystatin. Did the vet check the droppings for yeast? It is also made for a wound cleanser or ear gtts for animals.

Interesting reading about this product. Read the section under anti fungals. http://www.oldworldaviaries.com/text/styles/antimicrobials_4.html

Was that an avian vet you saw???

I would think apple cider vinegar in the water would help. I am no vet though, just a nurse. I see where the Nolvasan is given for sour crop problems.

I have never heard of giving a animal nolvasan to drink . We used it as a cleaning agent on bruises and such ...
There is nolvasan scrub and wash . We also soaked surgery instruments in the scrub.
Cant say I remember it being used any other way. Maybe avian veterinary use it differently ? I have only done cats and dogs where I worked and the occasional exotic.

Yes, it is an avian vet that we saw. I will call the vet again to double check it's useage but that's what she gave us for Sunny's loose droppings. Hmmm.... She did say it has to be really dilute, 1 Tbsp per gallon of water. I'm no vet and I know she knows better what she's doing.

Are you sure your bird has diarrhoea. Sun Counures don't have very well formed droppings as a rule. It's usually because they consume a fair amount of fruit & veg.

I am sure if your Vet thought there was a problem he would act on it. Diarrhoea can be a sign of many different diseases of the alimentary canel.

Sometimes a bird has polyuria & the simple cause of that can be stress or drinking to much water. But of course there are other signs that it could also be some serious disease.

Some Vets also recommend a water cleanser to go in the water, it stops the growth of germs & pathogens in the birds drinking water. I actually use Aviclens. I would say by the ingredients of both products. My Aviclens & your Nolvasan they are used as a preventative not a cure.
