Kiwi-3 year old Nanday Conure, Loui-5 year old Gold-capped Conure!
So I was looking at the website for the vet that I took Kiwi to. There is no place to leave comments about the experiences you have with them. And I also looked online at how wings are suppose to be clipped and I instantly became enraged again. You are suppose to clip the primary flight feathers only according to 3 different websites I looked at. They clipped her secondary flight feathers which explains why my bird can still fly. Also she looks terrible. She has these short feathers up against her body and then her other feathers are long, as long as her tail feathers. I am so mad I cant believe this. I found someone who cuts feathers on their own birds and they said they would gladly fix Kiwi's for me. I could still cry. I wish their was a way to tell people in this area that look at that website to never take their birds there. And it upsets me even more because they have a picture of a woman holding a bird smiling. Its crap. They dont know what they are doing with birds. Anyway, this was mostly just a rant and I'm sorry.

My "former" vet did a crappy wing clip too when I first got Remington~ thank God it was just cosmetic...Oh did I say "former...yes found a wonderful new vet! Just remember they will grow back

Yes, thankfully they will grow back. Kind of like a bad hair cut. There is that site, Angie's List, where you can post reviews of contractors and house keepers and similar. Maybe you can post reviews of vets and doctors, too. I've never used it so I'm not sure.

I know some times if you Google the vet Google offers an area you can leave a review. We found our dog groomer off Google by reading the reviews other people left on Google about local groomers.

There is a school of thought that suggests if you leave some feathers around the feathers that you have clipped, then these remaining feathers will protect the new feathers as they grow back, so reducing the chance that the newly growing feathers would get broken and bleed.

Nevertheless, clipping the secondary flight feathers is stupid. I really wonder if this vet knows his/her avian functional anatomy, LOL!

In Australia, there is a new service called UVent, where consumers can freely lodge their complaints. If the offender does not resolve the issue with the consumer in a very limited timeframe, UVent sells the consumer's contact details to the offender's competitors, who can then contact the consumer to earn his/her business.

Wow. They clipped her secondaries?

Not only was it traumatic for your bird, but the fact the vet clinic led you on to believe they knew what they were doing when they're really entirely incompetent with birds is just irresponsible and unprofessional. I'm not blaming you of course, I'm just amazed they'd do that.

I mean I called every vet clinic in my city when I got Pixel, to get an idea of who does and does not see birds. The ones who didn't told me so, plan and simple, and referred me to a clinic who did.

In the book, "Parrots for Dummies", (great book!), there is a chapter on how to clip wings. Not that I would have ever tried it myself but the one time that I did have Amigo's wings clipped, by a vet, I could refer to my book and knew that he did a great job, thankfully.

Sorry for all your bird's trauma..

I'm sorry for Kiwi too. And yes, they clipped the secondary feathers. I read an article about how that is dangerous because when they start to grow back it can poke the bird and cause some feather plucking. At least she has warmed back up to me. It took a few days but who can blame her. I wouldn't blame her if she never trusted me again after this. We are going to go ahead and clip her primaries today and then let her do her own thing for a bit before I try and love on her again. But we have really got to get them clipped. I have 5 kids and its summer time, and anyone that's a parent knows that means LOTS of open doors, running in and out etc. So its really for her safety. And I plan on calling the vet on Monday morning and telling them that they are very lucky I'm not taking further action against them. I am also going to let them know that I plan to tell everyone I know about Kiwi's experience and how they said, "thanks for bringing her in it was a learning experience". All I can say is that any vet I've called after this horrible incident I have been very thorough with asking questions. I will not be putting her through this again. I'll be sure and let everyone know how her wing clipping goes.

I couldn't believe what I read, clipping secondary feathers? I've seen people do that before which it looks absolutely horrible. They call themselves a vet clinic? I told my vet clinic off upfront when they made me mad in doing something I'm not happy with. Which I got mad at them twice in 7 years but noth time their manager apologized to me cause they were wrong, the vet tech girls that made me mad were replaced. When they look in on my account, they see how many pets I bring in. They know better then to do something bad to upset me. The owner came out and apologize to me in person and offer all 3 of my dogs 6month heartworm meds on their cost for a mistake they made. Stand your ground when your right, your babies are not lab rats for them to test on!!!

Thank you Mikey. I plan to let the vet know just how stupid they were clipping her secondary flight feathers. And also that I didnt appreciate the way they handled my bird. We clipped her primary feathers today and I'm amazed at the difference in her attitude already. She's back on my shoulder giving me all the love her little heart has. She went back in her cage for a few hours after the clip but thats all it took. She's not nearly as shaken up as she was. She's even stepping up when I tell her to!! A totally different bird. I'm so pleased. When we clipped her it didnt even seem to bother her that much. She didnt like being held but that's to be expected. Other than that it went very quick and very smooth. Thanks everyone for your support!

I got lucky with my vet. The day I wanted to take Bob in for her first check I called four avian vets. The first three were taking the day off. The fourth one is a largish animal hospital that handles just about everything with two certified avian vets working there.

I have met both and the only problem I've had was that when one saw Delilah for the first time he though she was obese. Then he realized that she was a grass keet, not a budgie.

This is just unbelievable... and a vet did that!
Even if they aren't specific avain vets, they should still have been educated in such a simple procedure...

I suppose that's why I do all my own grooming...

So glad she's doing well with her second clip..
