Hello group. I am new so bear with me. Today my Senegal parrot started flapping around and growling in his cage like he was having night terrors. I took him out and he continued to growl but he acted like he didnt know me. Also his one leg seemed to have a problem grasping on my finger. I put in a soft blanket and laid him on it. A few hours later he his on his dish eating but when i took him ouy he started growling at me again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Greetings and welcome to the forums. I would highly suggest a visit with a certified avian vet. The symptoms suggest several issues that may be diagnosed and hopefully addressed.

None of us are medically qualified, but the experience level is extensive. Can you share the age of your Senegal, approximate time spent with you, and type of diet? Has this previously occurred, and does the leg weakness persist?

Standard answer, avian vet!

The information requested above provides a base understanding that help define what maybe driving this behavior. As stated, we are not educated, nor trained in advanced Avian Care. That said the shared knowledge of years of experience can at least define the need for Medical Attention.

he is around 23 years old.. his diet consist of eggs off and on nutriberries, pellets, some pasta, a little bit of cheese. He loves things like grapes, apples and other fruits but I have noticed with them he gets rather sick like he has an allergy to them so I don't give them to him. He has been with me ever since he was done with hand feeding by the breeder. Today I took him out of the cage and he is eating, preening, talking some, but is still nipping at me when I try to pet him over his head and the weakness is still present in the left leg. This has never happened before. His food dish and where he sleeps are on two different levels and he seems to be going up and down on the side of the cage with no problem with the leg but he is not standing on the leg when he is on the perch but laying down on it. Than ks for your time.

Thanks for the update! The persistence of leg weakness may be related to injury or perhaps neurological issue. I would definitely recommend a visit to a CAV as soon as possible. A blood panel and physical workup may lead to diagnosis and treatment.

His nippiness may be the result of leg discomfort causing irritability. I might suggest consolidating his food/water on one level to minimize stress to the affected leg.

my gut jumps to this being neurological, was the leg weak before the fear incident? If not then what I suspect is that that incident may have been a seizure of some sort. Definitely a trip to the vet. The nipping strikes me as discomfort and/or pain in the leg
