Rita (Military Macaw),
Mango (Goffin Cockatoo),
I'll post photos, and share videos later, but wanted to give everyone an update on Rita. We rescued her 2 years ago now. The bad news first We lost our baby daughter last year about this time, and after that Rita, Lucy, and Gizmo started plucking. We got then all to stop. Gizmo is fully feathered, Lucy is going through her first big molt, and Rita is starting her first molt since she stopped plucking. Her legs, and chest are mostly grey down, but she does have a few pins. Our avian vet ended up putting our 3 rescues (Rita, Phoenix, and Mango) on Prozac once a day after having long talks, and tracking their progress. Rita is turning in to a real Han at times, and she was playing g crazy on our couch one day while we were watching TV together and she actually started laughing. She loves playing under blankets, and runs around rolling over and making all kinds of sounds under them. She is still terrified of women, but will actually get off me, and walk to my wife. She does come running back to me after a couple minutes, but it's progress. She loves it when I take her to watch what my wife is looking g at on Facebook. It is one of her favorite things to do. She doesn't like our other birds, and her and Lucy are very jealous of each other since Lucy is a daddy's girl a lot of the time. She plays with toys a lot more. When she used to get stressed or aggravated, and bite me she now just sounds really scary but is just tapping my hand with her beak or holding on to a finger making all her big mean noises but not biting like before. She hates it when I cut my hair, and I always get a few good chops after doing it, and she was furious for days when I cut my 11 inch beard off to like 1/2". She still has her times where she lashes out, but those are few and far between. She does talk more, but you have to listen closely because she talks very quiet at times, and if you don't know her you would think she is just making bird noises.
