Eclectic
Hello

I got Paco, a 4 mo old Eclectic for Christmas from my kids. He was fine up until I took him to the vet this weekend and since then he's began biting unlike before.

I've never had a bird and really enjoy him but I don't know what to do.

Thanks

What happened at the vet visit and what are you feeding him?

How old are the kids? Where is the cage placed in the house? What does the cage look like?

There could be lots of a factors.

Welcome to the forums! If you just got him at Christmas he could be starting to get comfortable. He is young at four months and most likely does not know how much pressure is appropriate from his beak. He may also be testing his limits.

Is he threatening before biting? Is he afraid of something?

If he is afraid, you need to find out if it is an object or action you are taking. When you figure that out you can start desensitizing Lincoln to the object(s) or you can correct your behavior. If he is just testing your limits you can start bite pressure training. Bite pressure training I highly recommend anyway. It can turn a wound needing stitches into a minor itch.

Owlet is correct as well, see how the kids are acting around him and how he reacts. Loud fast moments of young kids can stress a bird into biting or worse. Also you want his cage in a central location where the people are so Lincoln can be part of the action and be am member of the flock but he still needs to feel safe.

I'm glad you're here, and reaching out. Plenty of Eclectus appreciators here. You're getting good advice above. The Eclectus species require a lot of specialized husbandry, but are a total delight to know.

Welcome!

Welcome to you and Paco, thanks for joining!

Eclectus are beautiful parrots with complex dietary needs. I'd hope the breeder or seller gave you abundant information to ensure health and a long life. Please read through our Eclectus forum to learn more about their diet, personalities, and sensitivities. This thread is a sort of one-stop shopping to start: http://www.parrotforums.com/eclectus/52737-so-you-think-you-want-eclectus.html

Good luck, and please post all of your specific questions!
