Hello everyone,
So Im fixing to be a Newbie in the Conure birds. I had a cocktail a few years ago and it end up passing away. I decide to leave the bird would and now im back. I have found a 2 year old Green Cheek Pineapple conure and wanted to know a little about them. I have done alot of research. Also Im looking for a cage that will be easy to clean and also keep down the amount of feed that is thrown from the cage.Thank yall So much!

Hi and welcome to the forum. All three of my parrots each live in a flight cage which leaves them room for toy, perches , swings and still have plenty of room to flap their wings and climb around.. I haven't figured out how to keep all the mess in the cage but oh well they are happy:D:)

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Green Cheeks are wonderful as I have two of them. Pertaining to the cage and food mess, you are always going to have quite a bit of mess to clean up with these birds but it is so worth it.

Here is an example of a very nice Flight Cage that is perfect for GCC's.
Amazon.com: Prevue Pet Products Wrought Iron Flight Cage with Stand F040 Black Bird Cage, 31-Inch by 20-1/2-Inch by 53-Inch: Pet Supplies
With this cage you will get quite a bit of mess thrown out of the cage.

Here is an example of another very nice cage that has cage catchers on the side that help to keep down the mess. This will help to contain about 80% or more of the mess.
Amazon.com: Prevue Pet Products Wrought Iron Select Bird Cage 3152COCO Coco Brown, 24-Inch by 20-Inch by 60-Inch: Pet Supplies

Well I went and picked Tony (the conure) He has taken to me really fast. The only problem is they have not clipped his wings and every time I open the cage or open my bed room door he flys lol. Would yall trim his wings and how long would you wait to do so?

Yes, birds fly... and it's a beautiful sight...

If he's already taken to you, you might not have to clip his wings at all...

I don't clip my birds, as I love watching them fly around the house.

Well after a scare last night with the door being left open I called a friend of ours over that it is a vet and he clipped his wings. Not far but just so he could not fly long distances. I been giving him treat for every little thing so that he gets use to me and knows Im the good guy. It is going well the person before had never taught him step up so that is what we are working on. He loves to be on top of my head and like picks through my hair. I just hope that he will pick up on new tricks.

Welcome to the forum! So glad that the transition is going well with you. I think it was a good choice to have the vet clip the wings so that Tony will still trust you. You can always choose to let his wings grow out after you two have grown accustomed to each other too, if you decide. It was really great of you to take on an older bird!!!

Thank you! Im going to keep his wings trimmed for now because he will be in our office durning the day and I dont want him to escape. He it taking treats but I was wondering with him being a older bird do yall think he still can learn stuff?

Congrats on bringing a little conure into your home!

Please be aware though that a properly clipped parrot can still escape! With enough adrenaline and wind, a bird can still get lost outside... and once outside, their flight is now impaired, which means that they are in even more danger than a bird who has full flight.

Look into recall training, too! This is a better safety net if trained well, regardless of whether your bird is flighted or clipped.

Congrats on the adoption! And it seems like you both are doing great with the adjustment which each other. Pineapples are one of my favs. Now were waiting for pis.....? Hahahaha

Y thank you. Im going to start some training. We are starting simple with step up, then move on to recall. I have an office and I would like for him to start traveling with me into the office a few days a week. Is this a good idea or not?

I think it is a great idea to take him with you. As far as learning things two years old is a very young bird and conures can have a very long life not to mention they are adorable. I also intend on keeping my birds clipped because living in Fla I am not willing to give up my ceiling fans or willing to risk my bird getting out or into something in the house that can hurt them or fling into a window and breaking their neck:)

Thats why clipped his wings. Not to motion he thought he had to follow me everywhere in the house flying. Much rather have him on my shoulder. Lol

Well I got attacked today.. But it was for a cracker I was eaten. Tony got it away from me before I could catch him, and had eaten some of it. Will this hurt him? Now that I know he like crackers any suggestion on a good type for them.

LOL, gotta love birds. What's yours is theirs. I lost most of a cracker earlier tonight and some apple juice. Carlisle demanded that I share with him. I normally don't let him around me when I eat because he likes to steal food. I don't know why I thought tonight would be any different, but it sure wasn't. I had cracker bits floating in my apple juice. Dirty, dirty birdie.

Try keeping him away from you when you're eating, especially if it's something really bad that he shouldn't have. I've lost mac&cheese, cereal, oatmeal, bits of a sandwich, and so much else I happened to be eating to the birds. I learned to just keep them away in the other room if I was eating. They're rude! I was perfectly willing to give them a snackie, but nooooo they always had to steal what I was eating.

Tony is gorgeous.... and at 2 years old, he's not an older bird... Conures are great for learning tricks, because they love things happening...

I always start with target training... That way you can move your bird anywhere without having to touch him at all... He goes because he wants to.
