Hi, everyone! I've read countless posts and threads on these forums while researching birds, and decided I finally needed to step in and officially say hi. So...hi!
I was introduced to the idea of birds as pets by my husband (boyfriend at the time - we're high school sweethearts), and it's taken me many years to warm up to the idea. This is in no small part due to the fact that he did not properly socialize the two birds he got as a kid, and as they were two undersocialized birds living in a cage, they bonded together. This made them quite nippy and sour toward humans, unfortunately, and that's when I met them.
Now that we're adults and have taken the birds into our home full time, he's been slowly working on socializing them. Our blue crown, Prince, has gotten a lot better with my husband. He'll readily accept head pets, scratches, kisses, and loves grooming his beard. The setup we have for the two of them is much more ideal than in the past, and I believe that has helped them feel more comfortable. We have a very large cage, a small travel cage, and a large (but not huge) cage lined up next to each other, with rope perches connecting all of them. This allows them to move from cage to cage (which are always open) at will. There are many toys and perches available, and they're fully flighted, so we let them into the main living room area at least once a day to stretch their wings.
After some research and a lot of talking, I have grown to love the idea of having a bird we can properly love, socialize, and train from the start. We will definitely not get rid of nor treat "the boys" (as we call them) any differently, but a third bird is something I've come to discover a deep desire for. We're talking with a fantastic breeder several hours away, who has a new clutch of Crimson Bellied Conures, and it seems as if we are going to be able to swing affording a feathered baby. As I said before, I've read innumerable posts and conversations on these forums, and it has been an invaluable source of information.
I look forward to chatting with you all! :22:
