Newbie here with question..

Hi all, I am a new owner of a green cheek/mexican red head, but am not in possession of the bird yet. I purchased him from a bird store here in Texas, that will not allow him/her to be brought home until it is "fully weaned". I am encouraged to visit it at the store as many times as I want until he/she is ready to go home. This requirement is fine with me, as I would hate to be responsible for anything happening to the baby during this stage. I owned an Amazon 30 years ago, but never hand fed.

I, naturally, want it to be weaned ASAP.. so I am wondering if anyone could recommend what food/treat I could bring with me to the store when visiting. Both to encourage eating real food, but also as a bonding agent.

The DNA testing has been done, so soon I can stop saying "IT"!!

Welcome to the forums, and congratulations for your new companion!! I highly applaud the decision to wait until your baby is fully weaned - it is best for all concerned. Frequent visits until acceptance will help establish a lifelong bond.

The breeder may have suggestions for treats, but soft fruits and vegetables that you wish to introduce once home are best.

Let us know how the visitation progresses, and pictures are always welcome!!

Read the first permanent post in the Amazon sub forum, because what ever his species, he is an AMAZON, with all that implies. My Salty is a yellow shoulder amazon, and he exhibits some but not all of the traits listed there, but for a new owner it is invaluable . Yours will be a med size amazon , not as large as a yellow nape, but bigger then my salty which around 270 grams which is a small one. My friends blue front, a large species of amazon, weighs 500 gramms. So your red front should be in the middle some where. He sure is a cute little bugger.

Congratulations on your new addition. Your situation sounds very much like mine. Our breeder encouraged us to visit, but not until he was about three weeks old. The breeder was about 45 miles away so we visited weekly until he was fully weaned and ready to come home. The whole waiting process was difficult, but in the whole scheme of things a couple of months out of a 60? year life-span was but a drop in the bucket.

Check with the breeder about what foods they suggest. Our breeder started the weaning process by giving Cheerios, which we stopped immediately after he came home and opted for a healthier treat.
