Male Eclectus- Coco
Female B&G- Tinker
Hi,

I'm new here and new to the world of birds. We've had Coco our eclectus male for a little over 2 months now ( he was 6 months when we got him) and we are now waiting until mid July when we will be getting our Blue and Gold as he/she (not sure yet) hatched a month ago. I have been reading up on the eclectus as well as the blue and gold and want to make sure I do things right! We have a golden retriever and 3 children (7,6,3).

Any insight or advice on bringing the Blue and Gold into our home and introducing to our Coco without any ruffled feathers would be great:) Also, any suggestions on the best books to read on our B&G or best sites for any and all information to make the newest member of our family a happy one would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on being a new bird slave.......

While I have a very mild case of MBS (multiple bird syndrome), my affliction began without the distraction of an attention sponge young ekkie, though not as high maintenance as cockatoos, they do require a significant amount of your time, lest they start plucking or screaming.....then go out and find a macaw breeder for my new B & G.....I guess my question is are you sure you'll have enough time for a houseful of pre-pubescent children, with virtually no experience on the last two?

Actually, my hat is off to you for the attempt.....

Time...we never have enough of that either way! Time's overrated.. :). If the birds get along and behave I can bring them to work with me during the warm months. This way they can get attention during the day. So far Coco is super quiet and well behaved. He tends to prefer hanging out in his cage or on his Java tree rather than being held. I think we'll figure it out. The children love our pets and are involved. Wouldn't all this attention suffice ?

Hi dulphinz and welcome to the wonderful world of birds. :) AND welcome to the forum as well.

Not all ekkies will beg for attention 24/7, especially if taught at a young age how to play independently. Provide your baby with a good assortment of toys, including foraging toys, and rotate them regularly to prevent boredom. :)

Wow, and you've got a big mac on the way. NICE!!!

If I understand you correctly, you want your eclectus and B&G to interact and play together? I'd be VERY careful when introducing them to each other, even though your big mac will still be a baby, that beak of his can do quite some damage in a split second, especially when frightened. I'm not saying they won't get along, but the possibility does exist.

I have 4 birds, and divide my attention equally. They all get snuggle time with me and TONS of play time with each other. (My amazons get along, as do my big macs)

I don't expect them to play together...I know it may be a long shot but if they can tolerate each other and share a java tree without going at each other I'll be happy. They're both you g so I hope that will help. I know i'll need to go slow with introductions and intend on doing just that. In the mean time I want to get as much info as I possibly can! Thanks for your input:)
