2 year old Rainbow Lorikeet - Rio
Today I went to get Rio some toys (a rope swing and a rope and colour wooden blocks) for his cage and the lady at the pet shop suggested that I hange the toys on the outside first so it does not freek him out. It has been on for awhile and he is going closer and just biting the end (very carefully) how long be for i put it into the cage?

good advice from the seller, but it depends on your bird, nut i can put what ever in her cage, will not bother her, she will either destroy it, or just ignore it lol

personally i'll wait a day or more if using this method, but once his used to new things, etc you should be able to put them strait in, some toys they love an others they will play with a little, so you might find you put toy into cage and its lost its appeal lol

I hang toys on the outside of the cage and only hang one toy inside the cage because most of the day my birds are out of the cage and sit on top of it or on their t stand . I find they like their toys on the outside of the cage a little better and also when I leave for the part of the day to run errands I dont have to worry about them getting hung on a toy .

Sit with your bird on the floor, or on your lap, holding the new toys.
Play with them yourself, near the bird. Talk to the toy, sing to it, LoL even kiss it, the bird will get curious and soon begin to investigate.
When the bird begins to play with it, place it in the cage. When in the cage, place the bird near the toy, and again you play with it first, soon the bird will follow. When his is ready and wiling he will soon begin to play.

Hi Antoinette

Thanks but Rio is not tame yet and comes from a horrible home were he did not get any love was just left in him cage. I'll will give it a sht as soon as I have him tamed :)

Since he's not tame yet, maybe you could try playing with the toy yourself beside the cage? Act like it's the most wonderful thing you ever saw! It will get him interested in what you have. After he seems interested, hang it in the cage. With time and patience you will be able to play with him in your lap eventually. :)
