A green cheek conure was given to me last year and it had been neglected since the children it was bought for left home (17 years?). It seemed happy most of the year with a new big cage new toys and new kinds of food. It also enjoys the company of the African grey nearby. But suddenly now all it does is stay in it's furry Tube. If I get him out he acts happy eating, ringing bells, walking outside the cage on it's perch but suddenly always goes back to the tube. I replaced the tube once and put a nesting box wondering if it was some sort of nesting thing. I need advice on what to do. thanks.

I do not mean to sound like a borken record but when you have a sudden change in behavior of your bird it is a good idea to rule out a medical reason with the vet. How old is your bird?

If its getting happy it may be looking to nest in which case you DO NOT want to encourage that behavior. You can take the little tube out of the cage. We are going through a feather picking issue with our adopted GCC which the vet thinks is due to hormones and being frustrated. We were advised to remove all nesting type things (no hidey holes) and it has helped but is not completely better. See what happens in a few days if you remove the tube, you won't hurt him. If you are in doubt, you can check with a vet.
