Senegal Parrot
Hi! This is my first time on a forum so hopefully I'm doing everything right! I adopted a 14 years old male senegal parrot about a month and a half ago. I already love him to death. He's my first parrot (I've only had a cocktatiel before). I bought him a medium sized parrot mix from petco but he doesn't seem to be eating it all he just picks through and only eats a few things. Does anyone have a specific brand they recommend? Also, I've bought him tons of toys but he's very picky and/or frightened of them. Any suggestions? He does love to shred things but isn't really into rope or foraging toys.I want to make sure he's getting proper mental/physical stimulation while he's home alone! Thanks!

Hi Kellsasse, welcome to the forum.
congratulations on your Senegal, yes they can be frightened of new things/toys that are introduced.
shreddable toys are best , swings, wacky woods, they love anything with leather!!
dangling acrylic toys, bells, xtra large ladders, small wooden pieces, anything that is safe that they can grab with their feet.
My Safari is excellent in entertaining himself in his cage, he's really very good
right now I'm going thru the same picky eating with my gold cap conure. So I am giving him plenty of peppers, grapes, veggies, corn on the cob etc....

**edit** every week I rotate safari's toys so he adapts to change, and gets new things to play with and explore :)

Thanks for the info! Do you feed your birds bird food from a pet store or purely fresh fruits and veggies? If so, what do you buy?

Congrats on your new senegal and welcome to the forum:)

Well I have a Jardine but he's also a Poicephalus so maybe what works to me works to you !
Get him a Vitacraft parrot mix, it has almost alot of vitamins and such stuff, dried veggies nuts seeds and fruits...
Here's a tip, chop almost usual fruits and veggies you eat, and add some others stuff then freeze the mix and use them everytime you need to feed your fid
Example: apples, oranges, bananas, cherries, dates, kiwi, lemons, pears, rasins, cucumbers, bell pepers (only a few, mine gets watery poop because of it), chilli peppers, corn, baby corn, rice, peas, cereal (no chocolate ones nor sugared)
Seeds should be like only 5% of the whole diet. Feeding alot of seeds causes liver cancer and other problems you don't want your parrot to get.
Avoid Caffeine, chocolate, avocado and alcohol. Also the fruit pits and the flesh around them.
Apple seeds are poinsonous as well.

Usually, he won't eat normally until like one month of getting used to the house. After that you'll start noticing that he eats pretty much alot.

I've head you can put an old book into his cage and he'll enjoy shredding it

Tropican pellets, Higgins seed(mixed together), plenty of vegetables.
Favourites: Seedless grapes, peppers, broccoli, apples. He eats everything but those he especially loves.
