Zebra Finches
I haven't been active in a while, but I thought I'd give a quick update on my slowly growing flock :)

My local humane society held an adoption event today, trying to adopt over 500 animals seized from a pet store on the grounds of neglect. I definitely did not anticipate coming home with a bird but I saw her and I was smitten (and I've always wanted finches!). She did have a friend but I wasn't allowed to adopt her friend as well, due to the one animal per person limit (which was BS in this case, because finches are so social.) But I've been in contact with a breeder and am going to get her a boyfriend on Monday.

She has been pooping fine until recently- she tried to poop and it got stuck to her feathers, but I'm hoping it's just a stressful day, and also the fact that I gave her some vegetables, which she's probably never had before. She also has a wonky toe. She's very active- these were the only still pictures I could get of her- and very vocal and I adore her. I feel so bad for my canary in the other cage, though- he wants so badly to be her friend and she's just having none of it, haha.

So pretty! Does she have a name yet?

The local pet store Amy and I frequent always have a number of finches flitting about in a huge cage. The birdies look so small and delicate! I have always wondered,if a finch (or canary) can become a companion birdie? Hanging out on your finger or shoulder chirping in your ear lol.

Thank you for rescuing her..and let us know how she progresses!

What a sweetheart she is! I wish they had let you adopt her friend as well:(
I saw where they were having the adoption event, did they still have the Alexes? I wonder how the adoption of the fish went.
I knew better than to go, I think I would have had to come home with someone.

You can definitely raise a finch to accept treats, perch on your finger, etc. I've done that when I was participating in a species preservation project ages ago. I started with helping the parents feed the babies in the nest... as they matured, they would fly to me readily. I absolutely loved it! And I love finches. The feel of their teeny-weeny toes on your finger is a marvel.
