new quaker owner

Hi Im tess. I got my male quaker several months ago. Ive read everything there is to read and gotta say Im madly in love with MR. PICKLE!!! But I sure wish he was as nice to my family as he is to me. He was with his first person 12 yrs from hatching to now. She is elderly and now I have him. He loves me but he wants to rip off limbs of my family. I wish I could teach him to love them too. What a character he is!!!

Quakers fiesty, ornnery , defensive and over protective (and loud) yes they are all these things and more but the first thing you need to know is that you have to show him it is not alright to misbehave or attack your flock (your family)it is your job to teach him this behavior will not be accepted any movement on his part not to be friendly should receive swift "No!" and a time out (few seconds only). Here is an example: Say you are holding him and he lunges at your sib or mom or dad whatever you say "NO!" and put him on a perch or the top of his cage and turn your back on him and make a fuss over whoever he lunged at. This is known as Shunning in the wild a bully is not permitted in the flock and is driven out to the farthest branch away from the flock while the abused member is seen after (being out of the flock is panic time, for a bird alone is a in more danger) It is your job to to be vigilant and ensure swift action to forstall any bad behavior soon he will understand that misbehavior means time outs and loss of your attention. thats a start and you can build on that.

yes he is feisty for sure. He thinks he is the boss of me and yes, he is. He is so affectionate and so sweet but only to me. To my family youd think he wants to bite off their fingers.
