30 yr old Orange Winged Amazon named Hawkeye
Hi all! My name is Cyndy. I am from St Petersburg, FL. I just recently received a 30 year old Orange Winged Amazon named Hawkeye. He was my father's bird. My Dad got him as a baby but was afraid to work with him much due to his African Grey baby getting sick and dying suddenly right around the same time. My father passed away 15 months ago so, my niece decided she wanted the bird and took him to NY. Well, my niece decide she didn't want him anymore so she flew him back to Florida to be with us. We have been around the bird for most of his thirty years and we missed him terribly but, we are going to need help in properly training him. (if that is possible with a large parrot this age) He talks some and is somewhat interactive but, he does not like to be handled. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks much! :)

Hey Cyndy, welcome to the forum . I'm just a across the bay in Palmetto. I have lots of OWAs and would be glad to help. Loads of good forum members ,you've come to the right place.I'm sure we can help improve your relationship. It might take a while, but it is so worth it.

Wow. Your story moved me and I am so glad that you were able to take the parrot into your home. In time he will settle and things will get easier. Time, patience and consistency is the key.

I have been on this board since Sept 2011 and I think henpecked is a wonderful person. He is one of the first people to always step up to help and share his wealth of knowledge. He is consistent and his love for the parrots shows with his stories and many years of being with parrots. Please take him up on his offer if you need too. I cannot say how lucky I think you are to have your locations close enough to be able to connect.

I wish you well on your parrot. When you can I suggest that you take him in for a vet appointment for a well bird check up and blood drawn for full workup. You want to know where the numbers are so if any are out of range you will have the tools to help the elder parrot get healthier. You and your vet want the tools to be able to correct any onset of any disease. Please keep us posted as to how Hawkeye (was your dad A MASH fan?) is doing.

Take care,

Thank you Noble Macaw. Yes, my Dad was a big mash fan! LOL! My niece had Hawkeye to the vet last March and everything was normal. We are looking into a vet at the moment to have him checked and also to get his wings and nails clipped. I am very fortunate to have so many people right in my neighborhood (so to speak) that have so generously offered their help. I was thrilled when I happened upon this Parrot Forum. The people on this site seem to have a wonderful camaraderie. What a Godsend! Hawkeye is adjusting quite nicely. I will however, give him more time before we commence any possible training. I think he realizes that he is "home" again and happy to be so...Thank you again! Have a great week!

I am glad that Hawkeye is doing well. How wonderful. Now you have to get a female and name her Hot Lips. OMG. LOL.

Hawkeye sounds like he is settling in nicely. Hopefully you can post pictures soon.

Welcome to the forum. How wonderful that you got Hawkeye back & he is happy to be home. I had an Orange Wing back in the early '90s. He had not been handled by his 2 previous owners. It took me close to a year of stick training to a play perch & back to his cage. Then he learned to step up on my hand, but he never wanted to be held& I accepted that.

He will come around when he is ready. You already have knowing Hawkeye for all these years in your favor. Good luck.

Wow - thanks for keeping Hawkeye in the family. It may not be easy but very worth it to give these guys a second chance. You are lucky to have some very experienced people on the board near you for help.

Good luck and best wishes. Please post photos when you can.
thanks
