Hi,
I bought me a 4 to 6 week old lorrikeet.i am handrearing him at the mo.
I have had him for 5 days now and i am still feeding him the wet mix. How long should i still feed him this b4 i giv him or train him to eat dry mix and water?
Should i wean him off it and try to just see if he eats the wet mix on his own from the bowl?? Please help... Im new to this.....:

Do you have a picture of him you can share??? Cause at 4 weeks he's still very young and should still be on handfeeding formula! At 6 weeks he's getting towards the weaning stage but should still be offered formula. Then you can start feeding wet nectar and fruits and veggies mix and sprinkle some nectar over it, they tend to eat it better! Always provide a bowl of fresh water at all times! Remove any nectar and food bowl he doesn't eat! I also offer the Lory Nuggets off and on. Every once in awhile I offer him some.

When I was handfeeding our chattering, the breeder was a constant source of help to me. She said that when the lory started to consistently refuse the handfeeding, that's the time to put the food (same mixture as what was being handfed) in a dish, in the cage. I got worried the first day we put the dish in her cage, because it seemed she didn't even touch it. Breeder told me not to worry, lory won't starve. Sure enough, the next day, our chattering began taking sips by herself.

I can't remember exactly how many weeks old the chattering lory was when she went from being handfed to eating the food on her own, but it was definitely when she started refusing to be handfed.

The way the breeder had me handfeed our chattering was to make up a thick nectar mixture (not sure now of all the ingredients), put it into a Dixie cup, heat it to 104 degrees F, and feed it to the lory in the same way you would hold a cup for a child to drink. It worked like a breeze, and was so easy. When we first brought the chattering home, we were hand feeding her 3 times a day.

Once she was eating really well on her own, we offered fruits and veggies.

Hope this helps.
