I'm stopping in to let you guys know we acquired a 5 yo nanday. He was used to pay for a debt against his owner apparently, but the person who was owed the money did not want a bird- strange situation, I know! He is very sweet. I will be posting pics and letting you know more as I do! I don't know much about nandays specifically beyond their general conure care, so nanday owners feel free to throw in your two cents. I AM knowledgeable about birds, however.
He is very social :D. I set him on a play gym, so he could have space and look at the layout, but he jumped/flew on me right away! For all he knows, I could be a hungry hippo  !? He is very friendly and clingy thus far. He has a spoiled feel to him like he was allowed to do anything and has always gotten anything he wants. He has said a few words too. Pics soon! Advice on introducing him to my GCC :green2: ? I hope for them to share a play gym during the day but house separately.

Make sure you house them in separate rooms for now and to take shower and change clothes between interactions. You have to quarantine him for at least a month.

Aww! Congrats on your Nanday!
Me, my mom, and older sister rescued a 15-20 year old Nanday Conure last July or August, and she is a blessing! However, we don't know what she came out of -- only that she was in a cage that could hold a small family of finches! She didn't even have a name, hardly any proper care, no toys, or probably any social interaction with people. Now, she has a mansion for a cage, lots of toys, and lots of love and attention~

Just fair warning though, Nanday's can be pretty loud! Especially when they are sitting right next to your ear. But you probably know that if you have a bigger bird! :)
I also have a Cinnamon GCC, and she is nowhere near as loud as Ellie! But Ellie is pretty good until you bring out the broom or vacuum. Or she's hungry. She'll talk up a storm though! I think laughing and meowing are her two favorites!
Hope you have a grand time with him! :D

Quarantine and vet visit goes without saying!

I feel like I'm going to be surprised by this bird for sometime. This morning early the phone rang and I said, 'Hello' to which he responded 'Goodbye! *Click*' I was under the impressions that conures weren't the best with speech even thought my GCC does have a decent vocabulary.

The being loud in my face is new. I had a grey as a child and he was always silent when with me and my GCC rarely will do things beyond mumble while with me. The Nanday was having a full on - full volume conversation in my face! I believe he was also trying to eat out of my mouth! That is not something I do with my birds, but he seems to think I should! I'm hoping he learns to play on his own because he is flying to me as soon as I get close enough for his freshly clipped wings. Kitty has been talking to him from the other room! She is VERY interested in who is here. She has been dancing about and trying to get a look.

Here is a picture of our handsome male Nanday. He has such thick, plush, healthy feathers! I've never seen such a well feathered bird!

Name ideas? He doesn't say a name, and one was not given to us for him :'(

As a theme in our home, we try to give animals the names of other animals (IE dog named fox, GCC named kitty). This isn't a must though!

Sulphuria I noticed your avatar has you with a birds and a toddler :) - any advice on raising a newborn and other children with birds? We didn't have trouble with my childhood grey and any of the children, but my parents house is about 8,000 sq ft and mine is....a humble 1500ish! How did you handle noise and naps etc. I'm considering the name Panda for no reason at all LOL Actually, I think its the black face and white eye rings...backwards , I Know!

Oh boy, typed a whole response and lost it.

Thats actually my boyfriend and our youngest in the picture. We have 7 kids here, and up to 13 kids some days. The biggest thing is setting rules. They cannot take the birds out (theres 4 birds) without permission. They cannot put anything in the cages without permission. And if they are going to be in the room with the birds, they must remain calm and talk softly.

As far as noise, since day 1 mine have lived in a noisy house. Ive always played music, vacuumed, etc while they slept, so the birds can be as loud as they want. It seems when our 1 and 2 year old take their nap, so do the birds, lol.

The kids know the birds personalities. They know to avoid puffers, the quaker, because she bites. Anyone can touch and hold Freckles, the cockatiel. Cricket, the rainbow lorikeet, enjoys the kids in small doses. And our cag, papito, tends to avoid them. Although sometimes he will venture into reach of them and give kisses until he gets a treat, lol.

I'm going to have to make a video! I may or may not have a closet addiction to techno LOL and the birds are having a little rave. They are in their respective cages but both are jumping around bobbing their heads making chirps LOL

I shall wield this super power of video with great caution ;) Mr. Nanday is a food hog! He has a great love of nuts! Kitty never has, but I think the size of most of the nuts that I get are too big for her. She will play a little with a shelled almond and then throw it. I was so surprised when Mr. Nanday ran right down the front of my shirt and hopped on the table grabbed a nut (unsalted :D) and then ran back up to my shoulder to eat! Giving him space was going well, but anytime I got close enough to the cage he hopped aboard. He's lonely?
