Hi guys, just yesterday I picked up my first bird ever. She is a blue/grey quacker parrot born in early Aug. The first time I saw her I didn't dare even touch her but the second day I visit her I sat down and was able to hold her. Now I'm past that little fear and happy to have her home with me. I have so many questions to ask so I hope you guys can bare with me (I will be checking your older post too).

I do have three dogs sizes 4lbs, 7lbs and 15lbs. She is scared of them so I have her in a separate room. Will she ever be comfortable with them or separate room is fine?

What is the best food to give her?

She seems scare in her new environment, should I leave her alone in her cage for a few days?

Any advise is appreciate.

Also, I would like to make her some toys. What should I know before making her toys?

My bird, QuackQuack was afraid of the dog at first, but he is over it now. I would be careful though because there are the dogs that randomly decide it is a good idea to taste test the bird or paw at them which can really hurt a little guy. Other than that the relationship seems to be peaceful since the excitement and curiosity has worn.

Welcome to this forum

Thank you for the Welcome :)

I did think of that especially since I have a squirrel chaser :54:. But hopefully they will settle down. Thank you for giving me hope :D

I have a Scottish Terrier who is bred to kill vermin. She is hard wired to get the squirrel chase whatever runs around outside on the ground. My dog tried to mouth my Illiger's macaw and he nipped her in the nose. That is all it took. Now my dog leaves ALL birds alone.

Always supervised if you are gonna have the bird out with the dog around. The dog will need to learn that the bird is part of the "pack" family unit. After that is established then maybe the dog will take a protective mode with your bird. My dog will protect my birds and the cat.

Oh..as for the cat..I have a ragdoll which does not seem to have a heavy prey drive to want to catch and kill. However she LOVES Diego's tail feathers and would try to paw at them. Diego would tease her by wiggling them at her to get her to come closer. He would also tease her with his toys to try to get her to come and get them. Diego enjoyed taunting her to get her to stick her paw into his cage and then he would attempt as fast as he could to nip her. Dangerous game for both involved and I did all I could to stop this type of interaction.

After some time I began to realize that my cat was smart enough not to mess with the parrot. I think that probably when I was not at home one day the parrot probably nipped the cat so she stays clear of the birds now.

Diego passed on this June from a stroke. I miss that bird every day and hope to visit him when it is my time to cross the rainbow bridge.

Not to dominate this thread ;), but I also experienced that. My cat put its paw in the greys cage and he grabbed a hold of her paw and bit down as hard as he could and held on! That cat NEVER got anywhere NEAR the bird ever again

And thank you for your advise. Hopefully one day in the future I can take a picture of my pack. Since I can't get my skinkids to take a picture together
