Hi I am new to forum and currently trying to decide between a Macaw or a male eclectus. I owned and raised a CAG until the age of 7 at which time she fell in love with a friend of mine and rejected her "mommy" quite vehemently I may add! Up until that point she was my shadow, went everywhere with me and was very well trained, even flight training was going well. She now lives with my friend and both are living happily ever after. She actually kind of likes me again, but not as much as her new human mate.

Advice, recommendations would be appreciated. I like a bird that is interactive and enjoys attention. I also own a schnauzer and a Dobie, both velcro dogs, so I'm not off put by my pets neediness. Actually my horse is pretty demanding of attention too, he is pretty sure he should be a live in the house kind of horse.

Welcome to you, either are fine choices for companion bird, though they are quite different. Macaws are typically loud, boisterous, and affectionate while Ekkies tend to be more reserved and introspective. Obviously there is crossover with individual birds.

ParrotForums has members well versed with both species, and dedicated sub-forums exist for each.

LOL, my first reaction was "why not both"?
Probably a reaction to all the losses we had this last period.
On the other hand... parrots will always be flockbirds, so multiple birds = best.


Macaws come in all shapes and sizes (CAG sized to extra-extra-large) and if you like taking your bird places with you...a very large one can be bloody inconvenient!
So do you have any idea what you would like?


Can I be a terrible pushy so-so-so and suggest you (as an experienced parront) adopt an adult bird?
At least it will not reject you after hitting puberty- and you know the character of the bird and can really find the match of your dreams.
(And there are SO many birds waiting for another chance at a great home.)

Welcome to the forums! Ouch, sorry your CAG ran off with your friend after a seven year relationship but it sounds like everyone is happy with the new arrangement. Best of luck with your search for a new companion. Do you have a particular macaw or eclectus in mind already or still deciding? If you haven't spent time with either species it may be a good idea to visit local rescues and get to know the species you're interested in. It's quite possible one of the residents will fall in love with you, don't take your friend.
