I am excited to be part of this forum. About a month ago I rescued a blue and gold macaw that was abandoned in a house. The poor thing was in a small cage and to make matters worse, it only has one leg. I took it to the vet and everything checked out ok except it is under weight. I got it a large cage and it has been eating very well. The bird has really bonded to me. The problem now is that it laid an egg a couple of days ago. It broke so I took it out of the cage and threw it away. Tonight it laid another one. Any advice on how to stop this would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums, so glad you joined us!

Thank you for being there for this brave girl, sounds like she's been through an awful lot.

Amazing that her first exam didn't turn up anything too awful. This is just a guess on my part, but when foods are scarce for a while then there's suddenly a bounty and a hen finds herself in a comfortable new place, hormones will kick in and she will produce eggs. It's usually better to leave the egg or replace it with a fake egg, often a hen will replace every egg you take away. She should lose interest in the eggs in about six weeks, hopefully not that long. Continue to serve as much healthy fresh food as your girl wants but stay away from soft foods and foods warmer than room temperature. Sometimes it helps to add more hours of uninterrupted sleep. Distract her with toys and give her a lot of time out of her cage if you can.

Best of luck, please keep us updated on her progress.
