1 Quaker parrot that I live with. Kato belongs to my dad.
My name is Jennifer. I live with my dad and the quaker parrot, Kato, belongs to him. She is about 29 years old.
He thinks that maybe she ate a chili bean that was too hot, stove-hot, last night and she hasn't eaten all day today. She's quiet and cuddling up to her fuzzy buddy that she usually ignores. She has accepted some crackers and lettuce from his hands this evening. All day she has only eaten this tiny amount and she is not active in the ways that she normally is.
He noticed that she is taking the food in the side of her beak and not straight on, then only one or two little nibbles before she drops it.
Could she have burned her tongue or her beak ? What things might she eat that would boost her nutrition from not eating all day? Any thoughts or suggestions? ... or experience with anything like this?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Jennifer

It's a possibility she burned herself eating hot food. You should have a avian vet to examine her.

We are in a pretty small town and are snowed in currently from blizzard conditions so that is not an option currently, sadly. If her mouth or tongue is burned slightly, how long will it need to heal? Do birds heal rapidly?
He is currently hand feeding her some of her regular food. It's a slow process, but she is taking some food.

It will heal in time! Some babying would be good for the time being. So basically feed her anything she wants to eat right now would be all you can do unless you can bring her to a vet.

Poor baby :( She's older for a quaker, so she probably won't heal up quite as quickly as a younger bird. I would try feeding her soft foods that are easy to eat- oatmeal, mashed banana, if she eats pellets, soak them in water first.... you get the picture.

Thank you both for the feedback! She's finally eating some soft corn. We don't have any bananas, maybe we can get dug out tomorrow...
I will make some oatmeal though! She's perking up some now. :)
We were getting really concerned for a bit. She ate some of the corn on her own too and she is perked up and not skulking around her play area like she was before. I'm so relieved.
Kato was my mother's bird and basically her tiny soul mate, but my mother passed away 15 years aho . My father worked hard to befriend Kato and he dotes on her. He was getting pretty stressed. She's making her noises now...
Yay!
We'll keep an eye on her and feed her some oatmeal.
thank you!!

I think it might be a good idea to take her to an avian vet as soon as you can. Older birds do require a bit more care than younger birds since their organs tend to start to fail in their later years. Quakers are also prone to fatty liver disease. I'm not saying she's ill, but if she's acting off it wouldn't hurt to take her in and make sure she's fine.

Not sure where in Montana you are, but an AAV search found four avian vets.
Diana Kuehn DVM - Association of Avian Veterinarians
Shoni Card DVM - Association of Avian Veterinarians
Karyn Cook DVM - Association of Avian Veterinarians
Mark Klietz DVM - Association of Avian Veterinarians

Sounds like Kato is recovering, BUT rather be safe than sorry, when the weather clears rather take her to be seen to.

In the meantime, continue with soft cool foods.

Thank you again for your help and thoughtful replies! Two of the vets you posted are here in town. This morning Kato is eating on her own. She loved the oatmeal and she's nibbling g on her bell.peppers. She's still a little quiet, my dad says it's reminiscent of the time a few years ago when she began laying eggs. We shall see...

It's snowing again here and we're supposed to get another 10-12 inches today. :(

I can't express enough my thanks to all of you here. Your calm suggestions really helped the situation. :)

Hi Jennifer and welcome to the forum:)
I am so glad that Kato seems to be eating better today. Hopefully the weather clears soon for you, another 10-12 inches is so much snow!
